Not Great If You Want Your Kids to Be Kind

My goddaughter got this at school to read for an alternative reading book. I have not read the others in the series but I must be missing something. Personally do not think Halloween = Mishief night = TPing house = kids right?! Lying to parents, no repercussions, making fun of a girl left in her underwear being made fun of due to her costume being stepped on and name calling is funny. Actually, if children did part of these things at school they would be written up for bullying and made to join a class on learning to treat others with respect . There's a reference to "the nude kid", "yanking your chain"... I understand these are all supposed to be funny but I am left wondering what happened to funny books with characters who are not left to be disrespectful of people and property with.

a good read for your kids

My daughter just loves the My Weird School series. The books come out about every month so it gives her some thing to look forward to. The books are cheap so for your dollar you really can't beat it. The reading level isn't too high so she gets through them fast and it gives her confidence in her reading abilities. The main character A.J. is in second grade and hates school (something that every kid can relate to).

Two thumbs down for Mrs. Patty is Batty!

I read the other reviews...not sure what I am missing. We just started reading this to our five year old...we had to stop. The main character is disrespectful to adults and lies to his parents. Not sure how that would warrant 4 or 5 stars? I only gave it a one because it HAD to be rated with at least one star...I guess it goes for the illustrator of the cover. We always talk through those sorts of things as we read...but when it is the main character that is just hitting below the belt! We are returning it...and searching for books that provide additional support for our children...positive role models are always a plus.

Claude Rawson is Maynard Mack Professor of English, Yale University. His works include Henry Fielding and the Augustan Ideal Under Stress; Gulliver and the Gentle Reader: Studies in Swift and Our Time; Order from Confusion Sprung: Studies in Eighteenth-Century Literature from Swift to Cowper; The Collected Poems of Thomas Parnell, with F. P. Lock; Satire and Sentiment 1660-1830; and Cambridge History of Literary Criticism: Volume 4: The Eighteenth Century, with H. B. Nisbet.

Stress Points in Rawson's Critical Study

In his critical work God, Gulliver, and Genocide, Claude Rawson examines what he terms "a series of stress points" in literature, mostly through the works of Jonathan Swift and Michel de Montaigne, which reflect the European imagination in dealings with the barbarous (1). Rawson offers a particularly thorough examination of Swift's Gulliver's Travels, but often in the context of Montaigne's work (and vice versa) which would make a reading of Rawson's text less fruitful unless the reader has done extensive reading of these two authors.
Some of the frameworks within which Rawson explore the European perspective of barbarism and savagery include Swift's use of alleged utopian societies, such as the Houyhnhnms. This discussion is paired with Montaigne's writing to create the distinction between how each other approaches the idea of savages -with the former dividing societies into "binary oppositions" and the latter offering a more generous spectrum (44-45).
Rawson also considers historical contexts, specifically Indians and the Irish. He includes commentary on many of Swift's shorter satires to remark on the continual themes of punishing the poor and cannibalism among the poor. He includes a selection of images (found in the section titled `Killing the poor: an Anglo-Irish theme?') in which readers can see the European imagination at work connecting savagery and barbarism to the body. These images reflect upon Rawson's section titled `The Savage with Hanging Breasts' and would perhaps have been more effective had they been placed closer to this part of the book.
There is an interesting focus on sexually charged "stress points" that Rawson points out with helpful references to the texts he discusses for a backdrop. I found his conclusions about Gulliver's encounter with the female Yahoo in the river particularly interesting having not yet considered Gulliver's comments about the girl to intimate such a social commentary (92-94). Rawson goes on to explore the autobiographical possibilities in this example and others, but does combat the biographical fallacy by pointing out parts of his discussion that are mere conjecture.
In the final section of his book, Rawson explores the religious aspects of barbarism and savagery. He examines "stress points" like the castration of the Yahoos (Swift) and the Indians' mutilation of priests (Montaigne) alongside depravity in the Bible, making the connection between religious (and religiously barbarous and savage) backgrounds in Europeans' imaginations that he finds present in the literature. One of the aspects I found most interesting and shocking in this section was the connection Rawson makes between Swift's use of castration and sterilization in the Nazi eugenics movement -which I was not expecting when picking up this book (288-90).
God, Gulliver, and Genocide offers an insightful lens for considering texts. His thorough commentary and research allow readers to understand the parallels and distinctions he draws between a wide variety of texts, although a former knowledge of Montaigne and Swift would definitely be beneficial for a reader.

Important revision by Wordsworth in later life of his 1805 blank verse autobiography. A comparison of both editions reveals a maturity from Romanticism to Victorian moralism. Anyone interested in the growth of English poetic form should be captivated by this thrilling document.

The text of the 1805 has so much more life to it than the over-worked posthumous edition. My only grumble is that the supporting commentary is so moth-eaten. Won't the publishers offer an updated scholarly context for the benefit of readers?

He takes great pains to provide a balanced picture of the people and events he witnessed and gives due credit to the tireless and dedicated Sherpas. He also avoids blasting easy targets such as Sandy Pittman, the wealthy socialite who brought an espresso maker along on the expedition. Krakauer's highly personal inquiry into the catastrophe provides a great deal of insight into what went wrong. But for Krakauer himself, further interviews and investigations only lead him to the conclusion that his perceived failures were directly responsible for a fellow climber's death. Clearly, Krakauer remains haunted by the disaster, and although he relates a number of incidents in which he acted selflessly and even heroically, he seems unable to view those instances objectively. In the end, despite his evenhanded and even generous assessment of others' actions, he reserves a full measure of vitriol for himself.

This updated trade paperback edition of Into Thin Air includes an extensive new postscript that sheds fascinating light on the acrimonious debate that flared between Krakauer and Everest guide Anatoli Boukreev in the wake of the tragedy. "I have no doubt that Boukreev's intentions were good on summit day," writes Krakauer in the postscript, dated August 1999. "What disturbs me, though, was Boukreev's refusal to acknowledge the possibility that he made even a single poor decision. Never did he indicate that perhaps it wasn't the best choice to climb without gas or go down ahead of his clients." As usual, Krakauer supports his points with dogged research and a good dose of humility. But rather than continue the heated discourse that has raged since Into Thin Air's denouncement of guide Boukreev, Krakauer's tone is conciliatory; he points most of his criticism at G. Weston De Walt, who coauthored The Climb, Boukreev's version of events. And in a touching conclusion, Krakauer recounts his last conversation with the late Boukreev, in which the two weathered climbers agreed to disagree about certain points. Krakauer had great hopes to patch things up with Boukreev, but the Russian later died in an avalanche on another Himalayan peak, Annapurna I.

"Intrinsically irrational" is how Jon Krakauer characterizes the compulsion to climb Mount Everest in his audiobook Into Thin Air. The highly publicized fates of the May 1996 Everest expeditions, including the tragic loss of 12 lives, seem to bear out Krakauer's statement. Listening to Krakauer read his own account of the events in this unabridged version adds a uniquely intimate and thought-provoking dimension to the tragedy. Although Krakauer reads his account with journalistic professionalism, it's impossible to forget that you are listening to someone unburdening himself of a great weight, an unburdening that sometimes nearly approaches a confession.

Since the 1980s, more and more "marginally qualified dreamers" have attempted the ascent of Everest, as guided commercial expeditions have dangled the possibility of reaching the roof of the world in front of anyone wealthy enough to pay for the privilege. In 1996, Outside magazine asked Krakauer, a frequent contributor, to write a piece on the commercialization of Everest, and Krakauer signed on as a member of New Zealander Rob Hall's expedition. The disastrous outcome of the 1996 expedition forced Krakauer to write a very different article.

Those who read Krakauer's book may wonder whether the audiobook can possibly shed more light on the unfortunate events. It does. Krakauer's chronicle is chilling and horrifying. He recounts with excruciating detail the physical and mental cost of such a climb. Even under the best of circumstances, each step up the ice-clad mountain is monumentally exhausting, and the oxygen-deprived brain loses the ability to make reliable judgements. And on May 10, 1996, when Hall's expedition and several others made their summit assault, the conditions were far from ideal. The mountain was so "crowded" that climbers had to wait their turn near the summit while their bottled oxygen dwindled by the minute. By afternoon a blinding hurricane-force storm had stranded a number of climbers on the highest, most exposed reaches of the mountain.

Very Excellent Book For Anyone With An Interest In Mount Everest

This is a superb, well-crafted, true story about the 1996 disaster on the Nepal side of Mount Everest. This book will be of interest both to people into mountaineering, and people who know nothing about mountaineering. I am dismayed by the 1 star reviews of this very excellent book, the criticisms just do not ring true. Krakauer writes a very fair and non-biased appraisal of the event. He goes into detail about all the personalities, on both Hall's & Fischer's teams, but also other teams on the mountain that he interacted with. He gives a step-by step dramatic retelling of all the events leading up to, and following the Everest storm that claimed several lives. The book is not written so technical as to be confusing to someone with no mountaineering experience, but it contains enough detail to make it relevant to those with mountain climbing experience. Rather than placing blame, he looks at areas where better decisions could have been made (including himself, even though he was a paying client and had no direct responsibility to anyone on his team)--this discussion is (and already has been) of value in future mountain-climbing endeavors. For example, Boukreev used supplemental oxygen on his guiding expeditions after the Everest disaster. Later editions of the book contain a post-script in which he answers criticisms by Boukreev. This story is historical, its well known how it will end, but Krakauer's version brings this story to life in a way that newspaper articles can not. His book is a beautiful memorial to the people on his team who lost their lives, and to Scott Fischer. The only thing lacking from this book, is there was no discussion on how the storm affected and caused tragedy on the teams ascending from the China side of the mountain, but its understandable that Krakauer chose not to include that portion, as he had no personal knowledge of that side.

I loved this book

I loved this book. Every page I turned made me feel like breathing. It was a wonderful book. I also met Jon in Richardson Tx. when he gave a lecture about the climb. He is a wonderful amazing person who was my pleasure to meet. If you want to read a real page turner and if you want to get an ideal for what it was like to climb Everest on that fateful climb I I highly recommend this book to everyone. I was working at a Beauty Salon in Dallas at the time that Jon came to Richardson Tx, to give his account of fateful events on this climb. I passed the book on to everyone in the Salon and they equally loved it.
My husband and I actually were following the climb when we came home from work every day and listened to live feed coming from the climb on our computers. We heard Rob and his Wife talking to one another which was truly heart breaking. I never imagined that Rob wouldn't make the climb back. I blame Doug for Rob's death. I would have left Doug behind and sent someone else back for him. Doug should have never been on this Mountain and Rob should have left him long before the Storm moved in.
The story that Jon tells here will amaze you and you won't be able to turn the pages fast enough. I loved the book and meeting Jon in person was a once in a life time experience.

Impressive and factual. Fascinating read.

I really enjoyed reading this account of events in 1996. I feel Mr Krakauer was able to put ego aside and with extensive research and interviews to back up his personal experience, present a morbidly fascinating insight. I also felt a great deal of compassion in his account towards fellow climbers and even critics in the main body and afterwords.
It must take great discipline to write about such a deeply personal event with such diligence towards fact and wherever speculation was presented the reader was always made aware, and repeated attempts to offer technical/clinical explanations for behaviours that seem out of character or normal behaviour.
I remember hearing about this tragedy when it happened but was only inspired to learn more after seeing the highly holywoodized movie Everest. This book truly reminded me how important separating fact from fiction/entertainment really is and highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more from a highly endearing account from a humble human and gifted writer who happened to be there.
Thank you to the author for giving us a chance to hear your story and the events as you presented.

Gr 4–6—It's the fall of 1964, just after the passage of the Civil Rights Act. Trip Westbrook lives with his parents in Jackson, MI. They have a black maid, Willie Jane, who serves as a sort of second mother to Trip and his sisters. When Trip invites Willie Jane's son, Dee, to join in for a game of football in the front yard, he unwittingly sets off a chain reaction of bigotry and harassment. But it's when he tries to bring Dee to lunch at the all-white country club that the tightly knit community turns inside out. This is an unusual book. There is a solid coming-of-age story and there is some football, though the cover design may throw off some readers: students who come looking for typical sports fiction might be disappointed. While a pick-up game is the occasion for the events that drive the plot, the sport itself is a small fraction of the story. At times the action is intense. True to usage at the time, Kitchings's narrator refers to African Americans as "colored" and "Negroes." The use of a more offensive epithet is limited, but does occur repeatedly. The scenes in which Trip is persecuted by the ignorant Bethune brothers (and their hateful father) are compelling and cringe-inducing. Nonetheless, the racist violence, verbal and physical, is historically significant and amount to a stinging indictment of the hypocrisies of the culture. About the Author
Taylor Kitchings’ roots in Mississippi run many generations deep, though it took him a while to circle back to them. As a college freshman, he recorded the original album Clean Break, now considered a collector’s item. As a junior, he wrote music for mallet and giant Möbius strip, performed at Manhattan’s Café La MaMa. In the years between his BA from Rhodes College and MA from Ole Miss, he traveled from Memphis to New York to Europe, writing and performing songs on piano. He and his wife Beth have two children and live in Ridgeland, Mississippi, where he teaches English at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School. His short story “Mr. Pinky Gone Fishing” was published in the collection Tight Lines from Yale University Press. Yard War is his first novel.

A compelling, important story.

This book is probably one of the best historical coming of age tales I have ever read. The author does a magnificent job of capturing the period, and gives his young narrator a voice that is authentic and compelling from page one. When I requested this book I had no idea what it was about. I was expecting just a common story of school conflict. What I discovered was a surprisingly effective examination of one boy's experience in the South as the country was trying to enact the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Yard War is a powerful story that will resonate with and educate young readers unfamiliar with the period. The language will likely startle and offend readers, as the characters use racial slurs that were common during this period. Their inclusion is not gratuitous and only adds to the authenticity of the story. The author perfectly captures Trip's feelings as he grows more aware of the world around him and makes that ever important discovery that adults don't have all the answers and that sometimes their answers are wrong.

With characters that are well developed, dialogue filled with energy, and a huge amount of heart, this story of A Yard War brings a very important part of history to life for children in grades 5 to 8. It's hard to believe that this is the author's first novel. I will be eager to see what he offers up next. This is one you shouldn't miss.

For the Target Audience, Excellent Perspective on History and Race Relations Following the Civil Rights Act of 1964 ...

For the target audience – readers age 8-12 years of age - “Yard War” provides a very relatable perspective on history and on race relations following the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Taylor Kitchings understands readers in the target audience and writes with knowledge of the subject matter and the attitudes that were prevalent in the Deep South during the mid-1960’s.

A seventh grader, Trip Westbrook lives in Jackson, Mississippi. The son of a doctor, his only personal contact with “…colored people …” is with “…Willie Jane…Meemaw’s maid or a waiter at the club or a guy at the Texaco…” Naïve about race relations and the attitudes of others, Trip thinks of Willie Jane not as working for the family, but as “…my other mama…” He believes that if someone were to visit his neighborhood, his school, or his church, they would find nice people not people “…trying to hurt colored people…” When Trip invites Willie Jane’s son Dee to play football with him, Trip’s friends at first resist but because of his skill, eventually accept Dee. As Trip and Dee develop a deeper friendship, the conflict with Trip’s grandparents and the threats toward the Westbrook family intensify. Circumstances result in their taking a firm stand against racism.

Using the first person narrative in “Yard War”, Taylor Kitchings creates a very personal and very compelling story. Trip is maturing and beginning to have more his own opinions about what is right and what is wrong. Yet, Trip retains some of the naiveté – he believes his Pawpa when he is told that if he found a good “colored person” he would take him to lunch at the Country Club. When Trip takes Dee to the Club, he is surprised that Pawpa does not mean what he said.

“Yard War” is an excellent story and one that teaches some of the history of race relations to the target audience. It depicts generational conflicts realistically and the personal sacrifices that resulted for many affected individuals. The hypocrisy of church-going individuals, including his grandparents, who taught children “…Jesus loves all the children of the world. Red and yellow, black and white …” troubles Trip. Trip’s mother represents those individuals whose dilemma is that they are caught between respecting their parents and doing what they know is right. His father, whose background is not one of privilege, wants to protect his family. Dr. Westbrook must decide between whether to do so at the cost of compromising his personal beliefs and integrity or whether to take a stand against injustice and prejudice.

Language, racial references, and attitudes portrayed through “Yard War” are realistic. While the terms used in the novel are not used today, they were common at the time the novel takes place. “Yard War” provides an excellent opportunity for parents to discuss with their children the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the changes in attitude that have taken place and the changes that have yet to be effected.

great story

I got this for my son. My son is black and is being raised by white parents so I thought this wonderful story would help him understand the legacy of racism in America just a bit but the evening news these days seems to also accomplish that task. We've had some wonderful discussions about race as he gets through this story. Taylor Kitchings has written a wonderful story.
