5 + Stars for Falk & Hannah! I could not put this book down!

When I started Commodity I had some concerns over whether or not this would be my sort of romance. I should have known that I was going to love it. From the moment I picked it up, I could not put it down.
Falk has a job to do. Get Hannah to DC to testify, and get her there alive. After uncovering links to a powerful man and sex trafficking, Hannah went from whistle blower to victim. Only to survive long enough to be thrust into a new horrific experience.
No one knew what it was, no one knew where the women and children had gone. Falk only knew that he still had a job to do, get Hannah to safety – neither of them knew that when they surfaced the world as they knew it would be gone.
As Falk and Hannah make their way through the destroyed town seeking supplies and shelter a bond starts to form. As they discover other survivors, a camp is made and they attempt to adjust as they sort out what to do. But with nearly all the women missing, one thing is becoming very clear. Hannah is at risk. And Falk is not going to allow her to go unclaimed one second longer.
Commodity blurs the lines between fantasy and romance, but make no mistake that romance is the star of this story. Although we are faced with a situation of complete devastation, the story does not stray too far into the fray. With the lack of females and a new lawless society the survivors herd themselves into packs, some that are just trying to survive and others who are trying to take advantage of the lack of any authority. Falk’s job is to keep Hannah safe, even when it seems all hope is lost.
There are a few things I love about Shay’s writing. One is the way she delivers the male POV in her stories. Not many authors can get that ‘voice’ particularly right, her men are not sugary sweet. The can be abrasive and inflexible – but it is in the moments they show affection for the heroine that we love them. Her men are all alpha – all the time.
One other thing is the non-typical romances we get. I am sure she could write the heck out of a college virgin falling for the campus bad-boy, and I honestly would love to see her do that. But it is about the rough edges of romance with Shay. It’s the alcoholic jerk that is on a deserted island, the sniper turned hit man that can’t walk away from the thrill of the kill or the fighter who struggles to stay sober. It’s not pretty. There is no soft romance to be tied up with a pretty pink bow – It’s sharp and it’s brutal at times. And I love it. Then there is the humor. Because if you really think about it, you get a great alpha hero that is all sorts of a pr*ck at times and you know those types of guys can say some of the funniest things. And Shay gives them their lines – we get an intense story filled with action, a love story that is smoking hot and then we get laughs at just the right time. Laughs that make you apologize to your dog because you just bathed them in soda because you were not expecting her to write THAT LINE!
It’s tough to say if Commodity is my favorite of her books to date because Surviving Raine was epic. But there was just something about this story that I can’t seem to move on from. I can’t yet say if this bumps SR from that spot, but it is pretty darn close.
If you’re a strictly romance reader who rarely strays from the genre, I say give this book a try. The focus is the romance and the rest is just the surroundings, the set up for why they are where they are – doing what they are doing. Nothing overshadows the story of Falk and Hannah and their journey of hope in a new world. For those that are up for anything – one-click this!

Decent, but with Problems

I have to give this book three stars, because the writing was fairly solid. The dialogue wasn't stilted or unrealistic, and I could see the premise of this story happening.
The male hero (Falk) is very domineering, although he's written realistically. While overbearing men aren't my thing, I did like how he was written, so there's that.
The main problem I have is what a lot of writers consider to be 'strong female characters.' Hannah was annoying enough to knock two stars off this book. She single-handedly busted a human trafficking ring in the events before the story, and yet she came across as meek and completely unable to defend herself. It's a contradiction I can't resolve in my head... People who have the bravery to put themselves into a situation where their life is in danger are also the people who are able to at least try to defend themselves or have some sort of obvious willpower. Even a temper. In the book, Hannah is a doormat. She never throws a punch at her aggressors, and when she finally fired a weapon, it's not exactly clear if it was an accident. Heck, she might (at that point) have not even been able to tell the difference between her rescuer and her captor.
Hannah was sexually assaulted prior to events of the book (where, notably, she had the strength to lash out, punch someone, and jump the hell out of a vehicle before escaping - qualities we don't see at all from her in the story itself). In any case, after this rape, she would not allow herself to be touched, which is an adequate consequence. However, after the first half of the book when she is captured and made to perform sexual favors over and over and over, the first thing she wants to do when Falk rescues her is have sex with him. Her recovery is literally that immediate.
Really, the problem with this book is entirely Hannah. I kept wishing that this woman turned out to be Hannah's decoy, and that the real Hannah who beat up two sex offenders with her bare hands (and maybe a tire iron) would suddenly appear and take over.
I can't take off a star for the alien invasion sub plot, 'cuz I love me some aliens. But if you're going to shoehorn stuff like that in, you have to allude to it more in the book. You can't make it an mysterious, overarching plot and then have it fizzle at the end when an alien shows up for the sole purpose of just explaining where the women went. They either needed to be in the book more, or not at all.
(Still, cool Alien robot thing. It reminds me of the little critters from Men in Black, living in their human suits.)
This book is an okay read, but I wish I hadn't spent $3.99 on it.

I may be strange, but I have thought about the end of the world before. A lot. About what I would do and how others would behave. So I knew this book would be right up my alley. Hannah finds herself as one of the few women left after something occurs where the women and children are gone and many of the men are killed. She and her bodyguard Falk come to the realization that the men who have survived will soon be looking for women...for mates or for trade. This book was incredible. There were so many moments when I found my heart in my throat, unable to go to bed because I had to keep reading. This is one of my favorite reads this year. When the apocalypse comes, I hope I have Falk at my side.
