About the Author
Dr. Sally Crawford is an established scholar in the field of medieval studies. She is an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for the History of Medicine at the University of Birmingham; and is currently working on the archives of Paul Jacobsthal at the Institute of Archaeology, Oxford University. She is the co-editor for The Oxford Handbook of Anglo-Saxon Archaeology; co-editor for Anglo-Saxon Studies in Archaeology and History; and has written a number of books on the period.

Small Book, But Lots of Good Information

Anglo-Saxon England: 400-790 by Sally Crawford is an excellent work with lots of photos and art depicting this period, with detailed information on the archeological remains and the day-to-day living conditions of the island residents following the Roman decline in England after 410 AD. A perfect gift for a young person who is interested in this period. As one of the Shire Living Histories, a great collection of modern works on early British history, the small size should not detract from the information it contains. The descriptions of life in England in this early medieval period is well covered and illustrated with lots of imagery that reminds me of when I visited many of the places discussed in the book. Everyone who reads this book, and the series, should make a trip to England and visit these fascinating landmarks themselves. Maybe after the 2012 Olympics...Cheers!

Enjoyable, but get a magnifying glass...

A really good introduction to Anglo Saxon England. Only three stars because I had to strain to see the very small pictures...even with my "cheaters" on...would have been so much more enjoyable in a larger format. Still, worth purchasing to familiarize yourself with Anglo Saxon England.

EVEN THOUGH THE BOOK IS NOT VERY LONG, I VERY MUCH ENJOYED THE READING AND LOVED THE PICTURES. IT WAS VERY INSIGHTFUL.
