well written narrative

This book is an extended travelogue, an intimate account of the author’s experience, feelings, and impressions of the war torn country where she resided & worked as a professor of science at the American University of Afghanistan from 2009-2010. Dr. Travis was in Kabul at a time when suicide bombing was still a frequent occurrence. Her decision to go to Afghanistan, to remain there, and to explore the city and surrounding area as much as was allowed, obviously took quite a bit of chutzpah.
The author's vivid descriptions of the people, their religious practices, the busy streets of Kabul, and the country's crumbling infrastructure furnished an insider glimpse of the daily life of an Afghan. Numerous black and white photos taken by Dr. Travis were included in the book and certainly complimented her writing. Sometimes the author uses humor to temper the seriousness of a situation, and I found these stories especially entertaining. She recounted several incidents with unexpected consequences due to the language barrier, but none that proved insurmountable.
Throughout the book, Dr. Travis is honest about her feelings of anxiety, disappointment and isolation, but she persevered, and even took side trips to Dubai, India, and London during school breaks. Though she considered renewing her teaching contract for the following school year, she decides instead to return to the US to be reunited with family and friends.
