James C. Atkinson began life the descendant of an impoverished farming family in rural east-central Mississippi. While a high school senior, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force and, like so many young men of his generation, left his home to fight for his
country in WWII. After a year of rigorous training, he was qualified as a Radio Operator/Gunner on a B-24 bomber, and what began as the adventure of a lifetime for Sgt. Atkinson, ended in horror and tragedy in the war-torn skies over Ploesti, Romania. Though this is Dr. Atkinson’s personal story, it is not unique. Rather, it is representative of the stories of legions of young men from the Greatest Generation who would face the challenge of rebuilding their lives aft er rising from the ashes of the most destructive war in history.

Where is Romania? What is Romania? Why is a farm boy from Mississippi dropping bombs on it? On April 5, 1944, James Atkinson found himself in a burning bomber over Romania. He and five others survived, four did not. How he got there along with nine other boys, is the story of the Jolly Roger. At a time when owning a car was a dream, boys from all over America found themselves in places that they had only heard of in Tarzan movies, putting their lives in the hands of boys they had just met, while boys from other countries tried to kill them.
This is not a tale of grand strategy, but of survival in a world that no one asked for. It is a page turner that captures the story from everyone's family.
Sgt. Atkinson survived numerous surgeries to become Dr. Atkinson, and changed many lives. Highly recommended. Stephanie Hays

For the record I have never cooked field peas. ...

For the record I have never cooked field peas. For some reason I picked them up at the store today. I had pork chops, field peas, and cornbread cooking in the kitchen while reading This book. I read the chapter where Sgt. Atkinson had returned from the war and sat with his mother. She was shelling field peas. It would be the last time He saw his Mother. Needless to say I had a hard time eating dinner tonight. This book needs to reach much further than family and friends. It tells the story of so many young men and the sacrifices they made for our freedom. I certainly hope and pray the generations that follow us will read these stories.

A STORY THAT NEEDED TO BE TOLD

This is a wonderful book! It is a historical nonfiction novel that tells a story of drama, suspense, tragedy, humor and love. It should be mandatory reading for some level of education in American History. The author has diligently done his homework in gathering the facts and stories of this incredible journey. Any WW 2 history buff would enjoy this book and be able to add to there knowledge of this world event. Once you pick it up you don't want to put it down! I found myself wanting to save it but had to continue! William C Atkinson's admiration for his dad is truly heartfelt.
