A More Objective Review

Considering the only other review for this book currently available, I felt compelled to write a review that is actually about the book, not the subject of the book. A Harvard professor deserves at least that. Perry Miller's classic introduction to the New England Puritans remains an essential text for anyone seeking to understand the complexities of a much maligned and often misunderstood religious movement. An understanding of the New England Puritans is absolutely essential to an understanding of American History and American society. Miller does not espouse the doctrines of Puritanism; he provides a concise and helpful historical background and then guides the reader through some representative samples of their writing. This is not a book designed to convert someone to Puritanism. A sidenote: The Puritans referred to in this book have not existed for centuries, so I assure you no reviewer of this book actually left the Puritanism described in this book.

About the Author
Scott O. Lilienfeld received his B.A. in Psychology from Cornell University in 1982 and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Minnesota in 1990. He completed his clinical internship at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from 1986 to 1987. He was Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at SUNY Albany from 1990 to 1994 and now is Professor of Psychology at Emory University. He is a Fellow of the Association of Psychological Science and was the recipient of the 1998 David Shakow Award from Division 12 (Clinical Psychology) of the American Psychological Association for Early Career Contributions to Clinical Psychology. Dr. Lilienfeld is a past president of the Society for a Science of Clinical Psychology within Division 12. He is the founder and Editor of the Scientific Review of Mental Health Practice, Associate Editor of Applied and Preventive Psychology, and a regular columnist for Scientific American Mind magazine. He has authored or coauthored seven books and over 200 journal articles and chapters. Dr. Lilienfeld has also been a participant in Emory University’s “Great Teachers” lecturer series, as well as the Distinguished Speaker for the Psi Chi Honor Society at the American Psychological Association and numerous other national conventions.

Steven Jay Lynn received his B.A. in Psychology from the University of Michigan and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Indiana University. He completed an NIMH Postdoctoral Fellowship at Lafayette Clinic, Detroit, Michigan, in 1976 and is now Professor of Psychology at Binghamton University (SUNY), where he is the director of the Psychological Clinic. Dr. Lynn is a fellow of numerous professional organizations, including the American Psychological Association and the American Psychological Society, and he was the recipient of the Chancellor’s Award of the State University of New York for Scholarship and Creative Activities. Dr. Lynn has authored or edited 19 books and more than 260 other publications, and was recently named on a list of “Top Producers of Scholarly Publications in Clinical Psychology Ph.D. Programs” (2000—2004/Stewart, Wu, & Roberts, 2007, Journal of Clinical Psychology). Dr. Lynn has served as the editor of a book series for the American Psychological Association, and he has served on 11 editorial boards, including the Journal of Abnormal Psychology. Dr. Lynn’s research has been supported by the National Institute of Mental Health and the Ohio Department of Mental Health.

Laura L. Namy received her B.A. in Philosophy and Psychology from Indiana University in 1993 and her doctorate in Cognitive Psychology at Northwestern University in 1998. She is now Associate Professor of Psychology and Core Faculty in Linguistics at Emory University. Dr. Namy is the editor of the Journal of Cognition and Development. At Emory, she is Director of the Emory Child Study Center and Associate Director of the Center for Mind, Brain, and Culture. Her research focuses on the origins and development of verbal and nonverbal symbol use in young children, sound symbolism in natural language, and the role of comparison in conceptual development.

Nancy J. Woolf received her B.S. in Psychobiology at UCLA in 1978 and her Ph.D. in Neuroscience at UCLA School of Medicine in 1983. She is Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychology at UCLA. Her specialization is behavioral neuroscience, and her research spans the organization of acetylcholine systems, neural plasticity, memory, neural degeneration, Alzheimer’s disease, and consciousness. In 1990 she won the Colby Prize from the Sigma Kappa Foundation, awarded for her achievements in scientific research in Alzheimer disease. In 2002 she received the Academic Advancement Program Faculty Recognition Award. She also received a Distinguished Teaching Award from the Psychology Department at UCLA in 2008. Dr. Woolf is currently on the editorial boards of Science and Consciousness Review and Journal of Nanoneuroscience.

Excellent Introduction to Semi-Riemannian Geometry

The authors of this excellent text include a memorable passage in the Introduction that perfectly captures the purpose and primary strength of the book:

"The title of this book is misleading. Any possible title would mislead somebody. 'Tensor Analysis' suggests to a mathematician an ungeometric, manipulative debauch of indices, with tensors ill-defined as 'quantities that transform according to' unspeakable formulae. 'Differential Geometry' would leave many a physicist unaware that the book is about matters with which he is very much concerned. We hope that 'Tensor Geometry' will at least lure both groups to look more closely."

Dodson and Poston's text is a welcome entry in that all-too-small class of books that attempt to bridge the conceptual gulf that separates mathematicians from physicists when they write about differential geometry and general relativity. Modern mathematical treatments of both Riemannian and Lorentzian geometry are typically written primarily in concise and conceptually rich coordinate-free notation; physicists, in sharp contrast, tend to write almost exclusively in a notation that stresses the use of local coordinate systems and index manipulation. A person who is educated in one of these traditions must apply himself with diligence to become proficient in the other; however, this "bilingual" proficiency is surely necessary for the serious students of general relativity, who must study literature written in both styles.

Dodson and Poston's book provides an accessible introduction to the mathematics of general relativity, and it should be particularly useful to both mathematicians and physicists as they develop their abilities to read and write in both coordinate-free and index-based notations. The book is written at a level that should make it accessible to anyone who has studied multi-variable calculus and linear algebra. It is not a complete introduction to either modern differential geometry or general relativity, nor do the authors claim that it is. After all, Spivak devoted five volumes to Riemannian geometry alone and still failed to provide an exhaustive introduction; the subject is enormous in scope.

Mathematicians who find this book helpful in their studies of general relativity might consider looking into the following books, each of which is written in the same mathematical style: (1) Gravitational Curvature by Theodore Frankel (offers a beautiful derivation of the Raychaudhuri Equation); (2) Manifolds, Tensor Analysis and Applications by Abraham, Marsden and Ratiu (Chapters 6, 7 and 8 offer an exceptionally lucid introduction to differential forms, integration on manifolds, the Hodge star operator, the codifferential, and applications of these materials to physics); (3) The Geometry of Kerr Black Holes by Barrett O'Neill (if you want to UNDERSTAND the use of the Weyl curvature tensor in defining the Petrov Type of a spacetime, then read Chapter 5 of this wonderful book); (4) Semi-Riemannian Geometry with Applications to Relativity by Barrett O'Neill (makes an excellent companion text to Dodson and Poston as a mathematically rigorous introduction to GR); (5) General Relativity for Mathematicians by Rainer Sachs and Hung-Hsi Wu (a masterpiece, difficult to find today but worth the effort). For a more far-ranging treatment of geometry with applications beyond GR, Theodore Frankel's The Geometry of Physics is also highly recommended.

After one has used Dodson and Poston and some of these other references as a sort of "Rosetta Stone," then one can become reasonably proficient in deciphering both coordinate-free and coordinate-based literature and translating one into the other. It is sad that the educational process is necessarily so inefficient, but we must be grateful for books like Dodson and Poston's that help us in the endeavor.

Excellent, But Has Flawed Editing

I found this book much more comprehensible than the Bishop & Goldberg text (perhaps because the specifics of my particular graduate program made this approach more accessible). The only problem is that in some important areas of the text there are typographical errors; this text needs a new corrected edition--otherwise I have no complaints. The only recommendation I would make to a prospective reader is to obtain a copy of the excellent, old, out-of-print (but still readily avilable used, on the web) Vector and Tensor Analysis by Louis Brand and master the tensor chapter in it. This will prepare the reader to gain an idea of where the authors are heading with their modern, abstract functional analysis approach.
The reader will be greatly assisted by a solid understanding of linear algebra and a preparatory course in functional analysis wouldn't hurt, either. This material is challenging even for a math graduate student; any high school student who could master this book would have to be gifted, indeed.

Good introduction

I agree with previous reviewers, and only wish to add a few comments: 1. This book assumes very little on the part of the reader, which makes it ideal for beginners, as long as they're mature readers. 2. Like many books out there, everything in this book is real and finite dimensional, which is a bit disappointing. 3. It's not as advanced as the writers or reviewers would like to think. For instance, no differential forms, no killing vectors, and although there's a chapter on lie groups it treats only their geometrical aspects and not the algebraic ones. 4. However, it contains two (extensive) chapters on SR and GR which are pure gold, I say! Everything is done from the geometrical point of view, and only AFTER all of the math has been introduced, so the discussion is mature and elegant. In short, this is a good book to read for the geometrical intuition but don't count on it to explain everything about differential geometry. Enjoy!

About the Author

Professor Albert Fiadjoe is Professor of Public Law at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill campus in Barbados, and has undertaken numerous consultancy assignments in public service regulatory reform in various countries, financial sector legal reform, constitutional reform, local government law, small business enterprise development and the electoral process. He has published widely in these areas. He is also the author of Alternative Dispute Resolution: A Developing World Perspective, also published by Routledge-Cavendish.

This ebook is a welcome edition of a classic text. Vyvyan examines the patterns of degeneration and regeneration in Shakespeare's works by focusing on several of his plays: degeneration in Julius Caesar, Macbeth, Hamlet and Othello; and regeneration in Measure for Measure, Winter's Tale, and The Tempest. The ethical choices faced by the hero are premised on the struggle within the battleground of the soul between the forces of Light and Darkness, between the allegorical characters of Love, on the one hand, and Temptation, on the other. The drama of the hero's struggle is profoundly relevant to the perennial issues of the human condition. Highly recommended. Those who enjoy this book should also seek out the other two books in the trilogy by Vyvyan -- as well as 'Shakespeare's Doctrine of Nature' by John F. Danby, an excellent study of the spiritual themes in Shakespeare, especially in 'King Lear', and Martin Lings' writings on Shakespeare from a perennialist perspective.

Great book for those looking for results

This is a really good book for those who are new to self hypnosis or those who are looking for better results.

I recorded some of the scripts into my voice recorder, then lie on the bed and listen to them. Excellent results.

So far I've used the Stress Reduction and Self Esteem scripts (these two are worth the price of the book).

I'm always looking for a good hypnosis book to give me new ideas and this one is great!

Those who are familiar with hypnosis and hypnotherapy know that one of most important steps is to spot the client's problem.
This book offers a general overview of hypnosis in the first few chapters. Then, the authors offer a clear and comprehensive overview of various problems (e.g. weight loss, depression, smoking cessation, self-esteem and motivation,..) and dig into the reasons which might have caused these problems, proposing an easy-to-read and understand theoretical framework added with several examples, case studies, and teaching how to structure inductions and suggestions, depending on the problem itself.
This is the kind of book one might well treat as a little manual to gain some new insights with ref. to various problems a client would like to solve.
I'd recommend it to those who are interested in hypnotherapy and aim for a better understanding of these processes and for a positive change.

It takes a lot of work to keep myself in check as a peaceful, supportive parent. When I do veer of course, my daughter is sure to remind me of the error of my ways. For days on end. Days. On. End. Impatience and raising my voice does NOTHING to strengthen my relationship with my daughter.

I read and research. A lot. I have read all of the gentle parenting resources out there. I have taken a little of this and a little of that and tried to bring it together into a parenting style that works both for me and for my daughter. Yet, I still have not perfected the art of patient parenting.

I have been waiting anxiously for Dr. Laura Markham of Aha Parenting to write and release a book on peaceful parenting. I love her blog. I find myself nodding vigorously to every post she writes. Her words always give me pause. I digest them. I put them into action. And yet, I knew that she was holding back and had so much more to offer!

Enter Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids: How To Stop Yelling and Start Connecting.

This is THE book that was missing from my repertoire of gentle parenting resources. This is THE book that I read two times in a row while barely coming up for air. The is THE book that has actually showed me, in a palatable manner, how to be the patient, non-voice-raising mama I knew I could be.

Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids might seem like a lengthy book at first glance but it is divided into three sections which makes it much easier to digest. Each section is broken down further into pointed topics which are designed to help you master peaceful parenting. The division of topics is perfect, giving the reader the opportunity to let the research, the advice, and the real-life application techniques a chance to soak in.

There are so many things I enjoyed about this book. First, while Dr. Laura does not talk down to the reader, she doesn't present information in some esoteric, can't-wrap-your-brain-around-it way either. She is clear and gentle, yet effective in the research and methodology she outlines in the book. Basically, she speaks to your heart in a way that gets it to open up without making you feel horrible about your past shortcomings as a parent.

Second, this book is designed to be used for a long time! Parents of toddlers will benefit just as much as parents of elementary school age children. In fact, the earlier you read this, the more of an opportunity you have to use it as your child grows! Dr. Laura has several sections that she breaks down further based on the age of your child. I love this because as every parent knows, there is NO one size fits all approach to parenting children as they move through various developmental stages. Each age and stage comes with its own unique set of challenges and opportunities. Dr. Laura has given parents the gift of learning how their parenting can evolve alongside their children's growth and development.

My advice is to read the book cover to cover before attempting to implement any of Dr. Laura's techniques. As you go, earmark what resonates with you, perhaps focusing on those areas you really need to troubleshoot within your parenting arsenal. (That is a nice way of saying "earmark the sections that you are having parenting failures with!") Then go back and dig deep. DEEP! Don't take shortcuts. Don't try to rush anything. Take what Dr. Laura suggests and deliberately begin making the changes you feel in your gut you need to make. Then watch your relationship with your child bloom like you never thought it could. Your kids will notice the change right away!

A childhood friend posted information on "Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids" on her Facebook page, and I finished reading it a couple of days ago. What I have learned from this book has already improved my relationship with my eight year old son. My son thanked me this morning for reading this book. He said I am turning into the mom he always wanted. "Even if it means you don't always get your way?" I asked. He replied, "It's easy to learn from my mistakes when you aren't yelling at me about them." I almost burst into tears. This book is amazing, and by reading it I showed him that it is never to late to change your ways.

Good but not for everyone

I wanted to love this book but it's not for us. I think it might resonate really well with people into "attachment parenting" and think that should be mentioned in the description. It might fall short with some very strong willed children though, like mine. At least, that's what I found when I tried a few suggestions.

The positives of this book is that it does a good job of highlighting the need for the parent to calm down. There are good tips. It made an important point that other parenting books do not, such as, it's alright to take a moment (or 10!) to calm down before addressing the problem. Many other parenting books say you need to address the problem immediately so the child knows exactly why consequences are happening. It gives some good tips about knowing how your child reacts to certain situations and have the foresight to diffuse them before the problem occurs. It promotes empathy, which can only help your relationship. I found I already do a lot of empathizing with my child.

Where I have the problem is the constant "making light" of problems or trying to turn them into a game in order redirect the behavior. This might work with some kids but not mine. In one example, a child wants the parent to move from a particular spot on the couch and the parent is supposed to make fun and games with the child... but not move from the spot. That only works with my daughter to a point. She would not become distracted, she would play for a while but then become serious and reassert her laser beam focus. Another example is about spitting, instead of consequences for spitting in the house the solution was to take the child outside to make a game of spitting out there. Like, "Oh, haha, look I can spit further than you!" Yeah, I can just see myself and daughter on the front steps of our house spitting all over. I somehow don't think that highlights what a bad thing spitting is and would really give my kid the green light that it's ok. She's "strong willed" and while that example would let her know it's ok to do it outside... she would quickly push her boundaries and do it inside again.

I think this approach would probably work very well with my younger daughter who is more laid back and open to suggestion. However, I don't think it will fly with my older strong willed one.
