Inspiration for all wives!

Although there are many decent books about Christian sexuality, J wanted to offer women a book about sexuality written as though it was a conversation over a cup of coffee. I remember a certain married friend pulling me aside during my wedding reception in order to educate me on the specifics of how to perform oral sex; although it was slightly uncomfortable and slightly exciting, I appreciated a friend giving me tips because it gave me a little confidence that new things weren't scary things. This book is like that conversation. It's a little uncomfortable in a good way and a little exciting and a little creativity-inducing. If I could sum it up in a few words: it's a fun "idea book".

I read J's book while cooking dinner in about two days. It's a super-fast, easy, short read. Because most of the chapters are derived directly from her blog posts, each chapter is short and to the point. The topics are deceivingly basic: kissing techniques, how to perform oral sex, how to give a hand job, scheduling sex, considering sexual positions, choosing locations for sex, and what exactly to do with hands, legs, mouth and legs. There are also several chapters devoted to common questions: how to handle a low-drive husband, what to do when sex is painful, and what to do if your husband isn't the romantic type. I also appreciated that J addresses how the gospel applies in the bedroom and calls the church to address sexuality in a more effective manner (especially given how beserk our society's moral culture has become).

Although I initially thought the topics looked too basic for anyone other than a newlywed, I have to say I was surprised. What this book did was to get my creative juices flowing - it got me thinking more about sex with my husband. I think many women could relate to me when I say that it's sometimes really hard to flip a switch from being Mommy to being Hottie Erotic Wife. It has been helpful to try to remember to actually think about having sex when my husband isn't home so that when he does get home, I'm ready. This book did that for me, and I think that most of you will get some ideas from Sex Savvy.

Practical and God honoring

I loved, loved, loved this book! This book is very practical with a lot of specifics and is also very God-honoring with references to scripture. J. Parker is very funny but she also writes with love and wisdom. I will be reading it more than once.

There is a lovely section at the beginning about love letters. There is also help with kissing, sexual positions, and ways to use your body while making love. If you want to know more about how to connect with your mate both spiritually and physically then this is the book for you!

Exactly what I was looking for

I was searching for a book that discussed all the practical sex issues and addressed the biblical perspective in a straightforward manner. I have read many other books that either gloss over the nitty gritty details or are too vague on whether it's right/wrong. I was sick of reading "you and your husband have to decide what you feel comfort with with". How am I supposed to know what I feel comfortable with if I don't know the opposing arguments?!! This book was exactly what I was looking for. Whatever the sex issue I had I was able to flip to that chapter and quickly read the detailed descriptions of "how to" or the information I needed to make my own informed opinion.
Thank you Parker for writing in a way that didn't make me feel awkward for asking and left me feeling informed and excited for intimacy.

In particular, Lane focuses on the differences between the deaf as disabled and the deaf as a linguistic minority. He argues for a more coherent and compassionate society, one in which the deaf choose what is best for them--in areas such as education, politics, philosophy, and language. Specifically, Lane's research is about people who grow up deaf, acculturated to the manual language and the society of the deaf community. He writes again, as he did in his When the Mind Hears ( LJ 10/15/84), of the historical perspective and positive conceptualization of deaf individuals. Lane is thorough, detailed, and intensive in relating the deaf world to the hearing, and he backs up his opinions with facts, research, and vivid detail. As there are no other current titles that so eloquently clarify the differences between the deaf and hearing worlds, Lane's book is highly recommended for all collections.

Lane (Psychology/Northeastern) follows up When the Mind Hears- -his 1984 history of the deaf--with an excoriating analysis of the oppression of the deaf in contemporary society. Hearing people, Lane says, view deafness as a disability--but the deaf see themselves as a linguistic minority, feel that they have a richer social life than hearing people, marry each other, and celebrate the birth of a deaf child as a precious gift. After developing these preconception-shattering revelations, Lane reveals the meshes of paternalistic control exercised by ``audism''--that institution of school administrators, speech therapists, psychologists, and social workers that authorizes views of the deaf, governs where they go to school, and exercises authority over their community. Despite research showing that American Sign Language is a natural language with its own vocabulary, grammar, and art forms, professionals persist in viewing it as disabled English and refuse to learn it. The consequences for the deaf are dire: IQ scores can be lowered 30 points by examiners resorting to ad hoc pantomime for test instruction; psychologists administer tests designed for the hearing and misdiagnose deaf children as learning-disabled; deaf youth are ``mainstreamed'' out of special schools to languish in a hearing, English-speaking environment. The audist establishment, Lane says, has promulgated calling deaf children ``hearing-impaired''--the equivalent, he adds, of calling women ``non-men'' or gays ``sexually impaired.'' And economic self- interest motivates the audist establishment, Lane argues. The hearing-aid industry, for example, annually sells $250 million dollars' worth of hearing aids to deaf children, whose teachers require them. Yet virtually all of these children went deaf before learning English, making the hearing aids useless. What is to be done to empower the deaf? Allow them their language, Lane says, and their history and their dignity. Well written but very negative

The book was highly readable, yet there were some weaknesses worth noting. While the author made very valid points, I thought the arguments were weakened in some cases by a lack of reliable citations. The only other criticism that I had was that in many cases, the author seemed to imply an intentional effort by hearing people to force deaf people into disability. In many places, the book compared the treatment of deaf people to cases of racism and slavery around the world. While undoubtedly some in the education system do look down on others, I thought that the specific examples shown in the book reflect more on the ignorance of the hearing doctors then an intentional decision to hurt the deaf community. With the exception of these problems, I thought the book was well written and gave an intriguing history of the problems facing people in the deaf community.

If you don't understand deafness, read this "handbook"!

As a person who has a congential deafness of unknown etiology, I sometimes put up with people who are either misguided, ignorant, well-intended but wrong-approached, and likes when it comes to the deafness.

This book is absorbingly poigant and very eye-opening revelation of what has happened to the deaf people who are "victims" of medical procedures by the doctors who wanted to claim their fame as "curing the deafness" in the 1700s and 1800s as well as of badly planned and executed deaf education since the infamous Milan Conference of 1880. It extrapolates what is wrong with the deaf people today and what causes them to experience the indignity, disrespect, and so forth from the hearing people. To this day, they are still disenfranchised...

A Texas senator who pushed for 185-million dollar fund to rebuild almost entire Texas School of the Deaf snapped back at the group who thought he was insane to push for rebuilding the deaf institute when it was popular trend to close the special institutes for the people with disabilities. He said this beautifully,"If you don't understand the deafness, back off!" Exactly the reason for reading this book!

He holds an undergraduate degree in Computer Science and Political Science from the University of Pittsburgh, and a Master of Science in Information Technology, specializing in Software Design and Management, from Carnegie Mellon University. He is currently a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Pittsburgh.

A Valuable Survey for New Developers

I took Professor Laboon's Software Testing course at the University of Pittsburgh and loved it. So I was excited to pick up his full book on the topic.

Who I think this book is for: If you're new to professional software development - maybe a CS or dev bootcamp graduate in your first full-time job - this book is a great resource. "A Friendly Introduction" surveys everything you need to know to be conversant in testing. The concepts the book covers - acceptance testing, load testing, black box vs. white box, penetration testing, TDD, chaos monkeys, and so much more - get tossed around dev shops with the assumption that everyone knows what they mean. Without a survey like this, getting up to speed on testing concepts is a months-long process of piecing together concepts from blog posts every time a more senior colleague drops some jargon you're unfamiliar with.

Who this book is not for: If you're looking for a deep dive into any particular testing methodology or tool, look elsewhere. While the book is sprinkled liberally with Java code snippets, the survey format means that pausing to dwell on, say, the many different flavors of JUnit assertions would be untenable. If you are looking for a tutorial-style approach, consider supplementing this book with something like Sandi Metz's Practical Object Oriented Design in Ruby or Kent Beck's TDD by Example.
