Olivia S. Mitchell is Department Chair and International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans Professor of Insurance and Risk Management, and Professor of Business and Public Policy, as well as Director of the Pension Research Council and the Boettner Center on Pensions and Retirement Research at the Wharton School. Concurrently Dr. Mitchell is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and a Co-Investigator for the AHEAD/Health and Retirement Studies at the University of Michigan. Her main areas of research and teaching are pensions, insurance and risk management, public finance and labor markets, with an international focus. She received the B.A. in Economics from Harvard University and the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Kent Smetters is the Boettner Chair Professor at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and a Faculty Research Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research. His research examines incomplete markets, investment risk management, and the interaction of risk management and public policy. Previously, he worked at the Congressional Budget Office and served as Economics Policy Coordinator for the US Treasury. He received his Bachelor's degrees in Economics and Computer Science from The Ohio State University and his Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University.

Excellent read, gripping story, can't wait for Book 3!

Love this trilogy, and can't wait for the third book, which I assume won't be out until March 2017, daw-gone it. I just finished reading the last page in The Final Trade -- wow -- it's even better than the first book. I love dystopian stories that seem largely realistic, and The Dominion Trilogy has that feel to it -- that what-if-that-really-happened vibe.

The story moves along at a fast clip with no sagging middle in either book so far, and definitely nothing cookie-cutter about this story. Hart does a fantastic job of pulling the reader in from the start, and I was rooting for Zoey from Day 1 -- love seeing her grow in her determination and heroism. The cast of supporting characters are drawn just deeply enough to bring the story to life without distracting from the main events, and yet I find myself rooting for all of them, and hoping they all make it right up to the end of the story.

If you enjoyed Hunger Games, Water World and the Divergent series, you will definitely like The Dominion trilogy -- it has whiffs of all those stories, and yet is completely original with no overlapping of story plots, just the underlying major factors -- Zoey is a young adult woman who's forced into an unfair situation that is quickly coming to a terrible end for her, if she doesn't find a way to escape. She managed to break out of the ARC in a big way in the first book, and finds like-minded and resourceful friends that she carries into the second book. And in great story telling style, the troubles grow even larger in Book 2, with Zoey on a mission to end the heinous Fae Trade -- the sex slave trade of the few young-ish women who still exist on Earth. Zoey and her band of rebels unleash their own brand of unexpected chaos on the slave trade circus that's come to town, and it is a gripping story from start to finish.

This second book leaves us on a somewhat unexpected cliff hanger, similar in a way to the Hunger Games -- Zoey must face her ultimate enemy, the Director and forces running the ARC -- but first she has to win back her freedom and her daughter. Can't wait till Book 3 comes out!

Relentless thrills

In this, the second part of the Dominion Trilogy , Joe Hart takes us deeper into the dystopian wold of a shatters US. For an unknown reason, women have birthed only male children for years, severely reducing the world's population. What is more , the US has gone berserk in a vicious civil war.
Zoey has escaped from a research facility imprisoning the few young women of child - bearing age, where they were cruelly experimented on. She is with a band of survivors. They search for answers even as the autho ties search for them.
The story is relentlessly paced. We learn more about Zoey, even as she learns more about herself and the terrible conspiracy that affected the world. Mr. Hart is a master of making a horrific scene burn across the pages. His characters feel little hope, but continue their quest seeking revenge and answers.
I thought it was a very good novel of the genre and worth one's time. I would have given it a full five stars, but for the fact that I feel that the author should have included a brief summary of events in the first book. Even though I read book #1, I took me a while to get the memories flowing again. Read the first book and then this one, to get full effect.
Note: gore and violence, sexual violence toward women.

Terrific read!

There are many parts of this book I really liked. I always like the good versus evil scenario -- very strong in this book. The good, easy to like characters, easy to identify with; their beliefs and emotional commitments are clear. The evil, well they are certainly easy to discern, except for one or two who are in a grey area, where you wonder, are they truly evil, or extremely misguided.

The last really major scene, I have some problems with. It's horrifying in the extreme.

All in all, i found this to be a very good book. It continues right after the first one. Many of my opinions of the first book are also contained in this sequel -- which is a definite continuation of the first, cliffhangers and all, as the third one will be (hopefully without the cliffhanger)! I found it a compelling and dynamic storyline, with characters I could mostly identify with, and, it carries a very unique plotline. Some reviewers tried to liken the two books to other novels. I don't agree with those assessments, I believe it stands by itself and rightly so.

Always a favorite

Dueling Hearts has been consistently one of my favorite kat Martin books. The story based in early Truckee, CA--features a fire haired heroine deperate to save the family ranch. This book could have so easily fallen into the trap of the "long standing family feud" but doesn't. Sam Brannigan is a hero that every woman dreams about and I have always thought that Ms. Martin should write a story for Sam's younger brother and future Senator Peter Branigan. Having grown up in the West the picture Ms. Martin paints of early timber towns is quite accurate. The touching ending ties everything together nicely. It is a "comfort food" sort of book. Enjoy!

It's a great book, as all of her books have been. However, you need to be aware there is a binding error. No fault of the seller. But you might want to ask them to check the book. When you reach page 152, there is a repeat of pages 129 - 152 and the same number of pages are missing. If you can bridge the gap, it's still a good book.

OK book, but not great.

O.K. book, but not great. I didn’t enjoy this book enough to pass it along to a relative or friend. The book takes place in the 1800’s, and is a Western setting, on a California ranch. The plot is good. However, I didn’t like the creepy guardian, Mr. Foley. I see others liked this book better than I did, so don’t let me stop you from reading it. I have enjoyed some books set in the West - Johanna Lindsey used to be my favorite author, and her Western setting books were very enjoyable - but this one just wasn't as good as I would have liked it to be.

This book is so valuable!!

The Gerson Therapy saved my life.

I was diagnosed with SLE ( Lupus), and there was nothing that the M.D.'s could offer me, except Prednisone...which was urged upon me.

Through the fortunate advice of a friend, I read the Gerson book...and to make a very long story short, I decided to do the program.

Let me just say here, in rebuttal to the first reviewer of this book, that NOWHERE in this book does it suggest that on should JUST do coffe enemas. Quite the contrary. If one is doing coffee enemas, it is essential that one ALSO be drinking the juices.

In fact, if one is serious about getting well, it is absolutely essential that one do the program to the letter- not just some elements.

I stayed on the Gerson program for two and one half years. Hard? Yes.

But I came out of it healed.

I went into the program so very sick, hair falling out, skin sores, terrible joint pain, failing kidneys.

That was more than fifteen years ago , now, with no recurrance. And I neved did take the Prednisone.

I did the Therapy at home, with the Gerson book as my guide. ( The Gerson staff, in terms of support and more information, were my telephone angels.)

So, while my experience was not with cancer, I most certainly will recommend this book to those who suffer from auto-immune disorders, and also to those those who simply are interested in knowing how bertter to preserve and restore health.

Read this book on Chronic Disease first

A Highly Recommended First Book On The Use And Application Of Alternative Medicine/Natural Healing for Chronic Conditions.
This is the book that I would first recommend for anyone wanting to understand the use of alternative medicine for the healing of any chronic condition including cancer I would also highly recommend this book to anyone contemplating the use of conventional medicine as well because of the excellent material on the disease process and the potential for using this or some other alternative therapy in a complimentary or combination process of natural and conventional healing. The issue in addressing healing of chronic diseases is for the person with the disease and their family to be sufficiently unformed of the causes and all possible treatment possibilities so that they can make informed and responsible decisions about their total treatment. Other therapies and approaches could be evaluated as to how well they addressed all of the healing concepts detailed in this book.
"The Gerson Therapy" is a welcome and highly recommended addition to the multitude of books that address healing of chronic conditions including cancer by using natural or alternative means. The specific approach is healing by a combination of high quality nutrition and total body detoxification. The Therapy is a total program and does require significant life style changes at least for the detailed therapy. Actually, lifetime lifestyle changes will be required to remain healthy, but these are easily done once one has gone through the detailed therapy.
This book accomplishes several needed functions. The Gerson Therapy is brought up to date, (the therapy is over 60 years old), with the latest information including program modifications for people who have had chemotherapy, for people who are in an extremely weakened state, and a modified program for non cancer chronic conditions. The information is provided in a highly readable and understandable format. The book details the background, theory, and enough specific cases to establish credibility without being overbearing. In fact most of the case studies are used to detail understanding of the therapy. The book does not sugar coat the difficulty of healing using natural therapy and states that the Gerson Therapy may be the most difficult to follow of the many that are available. All of the information required to do the therapy either on one's own or in conjunction with a qualified clinic or practitioner is provided in easily accessible section. (There is some redundancy in some of the specific sections but this redundancy eliminates the need to search for needed information for people who are following the therapy). The number of recipes is expanded from previous books, and this is a welcome addition for anyone who has followed the therapy. The mental aspects of natural healing are now addressed and are given a separate section in the book. Finally, many tricks and techniques needed to make the therapy more workable are included. The bottom line is that the book is both informative and is useable as a day to day guide for anyone deciding to do the therapy.
I feel qualified to make these statements about this book because three years ago I was diagnosed with cancer and after much research and discussions with conventional and alternative practitioners, I chose to first start with the Gerson Therapy. The results have been wonderful with the cancer having gone in remission after about 18 months and numerous other problems have responded to the therapy as well. I have not had to revert to my back up plan of conventional medicine. Yes the therapy can be difficult to follow particularly because it is highly restrictive on food, requires time to make fresh vegetable juices several times every day, and requires time to do the detoxification procedures. And yes, the diet has different taste due to the salt and fat restrictions, but one quickly get use to the different tasee However, to be healed without permanent side effects is well worth the effort and the required life style changes. While I had excellent support materials available, this book is still a significant improvement to the available literature. I found nothing in this book that I had a problem with and with the improvements that have been made, the book deserves the five star rating
The process of natural healing is not easy, requires attention to detail, and continued study to avoid setbacks through the process. This new book on the Gerson Therapy will provide information that can assist the decision process and will provide up to date information on the therapy's application.

Outstanding Resource !

Much like the previous poster, I also suffered a degenerative disease. I did the research for a cure while healing from some conventional radiation therapy. I began the Gerson Therapy (GT)as indicated in this book in part, started feeling stronger and got into it full tilt. I must admit, Dr. Max Gerson MD, the author's father, hit the nail on the head in terms of a curative therapy. His is some heirloom information and techniques that have survived because they work.
If you need to buy a book on how to get well from degenerative disease, this is the first choice. Get started now. Begin now. Disease as simple as arthritis, and as tough as cancer respond to this therapy. I know from personal experience also. The program is nutritional and detoxification with minimum supplements. The book informs as to what and why and when to use what. They do not sell vitamins, or expensive publications, just straight forward truth.
I also, particularily for Multiple Myeloma or Plasmacytoma patients, but cancer patients generally, highly recommend the book, 'Living Proof', by Michael Gearin-Tosh, published 2002. It is a wonderful narrative of how to approach cancer treatment written by a man diagnosed MM but who did Gerson Therapy and lives.

An Excellent First Book On The Subject!

I wanted to understand the basics of what goes into
jewelry repair and creation. Can I resize my own
rings? Can I set my own stones? What simple
maintenance can I do instead of having to pay
big bucks to a professional, it just can't be
that hard!
This book proved me right. It's a wonderful
reference and text. It's not too much, it's not
too little, it's not too technical. Jewelers
tools are shown and explained. If you want
to build a jewelry repair set up in your home
this will show you how to make one that's just
right for you.
Someone said it's "dated", which I would rephrase
by saying it's a good, time tested and true basic
source of reliable up to date information. The
tricks they use out there and charge top dollar
for amazed me. I'm a smarter shopper now too.
If you want one book on the subject, this really
is a great choice.

While a bit dated, this book presents an excellent primer for the beginning jeweler. It is written in a clear, concise manner, with excellent illustrations to support the text. If you are looking for a basic, how-to book to learn the time-tested methods of jewelry repair...this is your book!

Another Dover reprint that is a good idea

This is another one of those times classics that has been updated. With the newer information. I have a 1st Edition this version has 130 pages added checking the index with updated info.This is not for the Beader,Newbie or Wire Twister. It will not add much to their enjoyment of their chosen field. If they are looking to expand their knowledge of the metalsmithing field this would be a low cost way to cover a lot of ground for a small price and might find themselves with a ready reference. I own the first edition I use it and will be looking for the dover reprint.

About the Author
Robert W. Patterson graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1985. After graduation, he designed and built complex circuit cards for the defense industry. Later, Robert advanced into systems design and troubleshooting. In 2010 he discovered the Arduino world and became an active member of the forum. He also designed his own version of the Arduino, the "Robertuino," or "Bobuino" to its friends.

Kathleen M. Patterson graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1986 and from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1994. After graduation from Rensselaer, she started in the defense industry. Kathy moved on to the commercial world to design telecommunications and networking equipment. In her spare time, she works with middle school students to build robots.

BEST QUIDE FOR ARDUINO YET! Covers all the basics and also "what to watch out fors".

This book gives a LOT more than just the basic facts. LOTS of potential "snafus" of electrical design and work are included in these pages- which would take years to learn.... the hard way... The pictures and diagrams are clearly labeled and easy to understand. One major difference is how the work actually "reads". Its obvious they are brilliant in their field, but do not come off as egotistical scientists, using words and phrases assuming I have been using these same terms for years. They use everyday language and take the time to explain those little "extras" that I needed to know, like abbreviations and where to find the best supply of pieces. At times they even inject a little humor into their writing- showing that it is helpful to have a light hearted attitude when first learning how to decide what to design and then proceeding with your "master work".
