Wow. One hundred and one complete blueprints for a romantic seduction scene. Once a week you and your beloved are supposed to pick a scenario from the book; they're packaged so that they can't be read until they're torn out and opened, so neither of you will have a clue what the other has in store for you. (No cheating!) Icons on the front pages of each plan let you know the approximate cost, whether travel or food is involved, and whether it should be chosen during a particular season. Have a grrreat time!

Grrreat book, but requires some effort and expense

I got this book for my husband as a Valentine's Day present, not because I thought our romance needed work, but because I thought it would be fun and introduce us to some new ideas. It *has* been a lot of fun, but after the first couple of weeks we switched to doing the romances every other week because 1) even the "inexpensive" ones were turning out more expensive than we thought they would be, and 2) pulling an envelope on Sunday and performing the romance by Saturday just wasn't enough time in a lot of cases! So now we switch off - I'll do one one week, and he'll do one the next week, and we pull our envelopes two weeks in advance to give us plenty of time to plan.
Most of the romances have been LOTS of fun, and very romantic, but so far the "kiss of the week"s have been sortof dumb, and the "passion coupon"s just haven't been manageable.
Don't let those things stop you from buying the book, though! The ideas for the romances are FANTASTIC, even if they frequently need a little (or a lot) of adapting to make them fit in your lifestyle - they at least give you a starting point to work with!
*DO* pay attention to the expense, though. So far we've wound up paying at least $10 - $25 MORE for each romance than she predicts. If you're on a tight budget, this might just make you even more stressed. If you're on a budget, I still recommend buying the book, and then pulling ALL of the envelopes in advance so you get a reasonable idea of what they cost, and maybe some ideas for reducing the cost.

My husband and I have been together 12+ years. Two kids and one house later, we have fallen into a rut. (Sounds familiar?)
I'm thrilled that we have this book. True, some of the ideas are corny, but wasn't that how it was when you first met your mate? This book reminds you how to be considerate, thoughtful, anticipating each "romance" together. You get out of it what you put into it.
We have experienced 4 romances so far, and for the most part they have been memorable, if not always perfect. The icons are helpful to clue you in on preparation time, $ spent, etc. The anticipation is truly half of the fun. Two of our friends have purchased this book on our recommendation... it's worth a look.

More than just pictures!

I picked up this book, expecting to find essentially a picture book. However, this book is so much more...and it is lovely.
The book begins with an introduction by Leonard Marcus, the children's book reviewer for Parenting Magazine and a well-known book critic and historian.
Following this is an autobiography with many personal photos. I found the story of Carle's early years interesting: how he was born in the United States but then his parents returned to Germany when he was six. His father was drafted into the German army during World War II and Carle never saw him again for 8 years, when he emerged from a Russian POW camp weighing 80 pounds. Carle was a lackluster student, mainly because his creativity was stifled, but he did have some empathetic art teachers in Germany. In his early 20s he returned to the U.S. where he was promptly drafted into the army!
The next section of this book was by Ann Beneduce, the first editor to publish Carle's work. She first commissioned him to illustrate a cookbook. After that, she decided to publish his first book "1,2,3 to the Zoo" but could find no one in the United States who could satisfactorily produce it, so she had it done in Japan.
Next, Viktor Christen, a German editor, wrote about Carle's vision and what it means to children.
Takeshi Matsumoto, the director of an art museum for picture books in Japan, wrote an essay about Carle's use of color.
The text of a speech, entitled "Where Do Ideas Come From?", given by Carle at the Library of Congress was the next section of this book. He gave this speech to librarians and educators in 1990 at the International Children's Book Day Celebration.
Next was a photo essay on his technique of paper coloring and collaging, which also explained why he colors white tissue paper rather than buying pre-colored papers (they fade with age).
Lastly was a section of illustrations from his books, in chronological order. I found it interesting to see how his art had changed and become much more detailed in 30 years.

Excellent text book for Women Studies Intro Classes

This book is great because of the little stories that are incorporated throughout, the statistics and insightful connections. It gives credit where credit is due to women all over the world, unlike some texts that seem to indicate that only the US gets women's issues right. An easy read. Scholarly material. Well researched.

Strong Introductory Text & Reader includes Multiple Voices

As an instructor of women and gender studies, I have found this text to be a strong one for introductory WGS courses, particularly for those in global perspective. It's also an excellent text as an introduction to transnational feminist thought and practice. The strength of this text is its multiplicity of voices. Each chapter is authored by topic specialists, so rather than one authoritative voice, so that each topic area is strong and thorough. In addition, every chapter includes readings and essays that further bring the topical issues into perspective for students.

Its very strength in folding in numerous voices, however, also makes for a weakness: the variety of voices can make it difficult to maintain cohesion throughout the chapters that one would see with a standard textbook. There are going to be some repetitions, which is to be expected, and even some areas where students are expected to know or remember more than they might normally. Another strength can be a weakness, or vice versa: it has a strong focus on transnational feminist thought, and the development of critiques of Western feminism, which is a fantastic starting point for some classes, but may not be as relevant for others (such as those focusing mainly on globalization, or the history of women/gender in development discourse). Overall, though, the book is well done, and I would think most Instructors will find it one of the strongest in the field at this time.

Book wasn't in the best condition when I received it. There were places where the spine was split. No pages falling out and not too much highlighting though. Okay for the price.

Disappointed but haven't given up...

I usually put my reviews on the UK Amazon site. However, after reading the US Amazon reviews of 'Bad Moon Rising' I thought I'd copy my review here.

My favourites in the Dark Hunter series are the Wren and Vane stories, so I've been waiting with enthusiasm for Fang's story (he and Aimee are the inter-species Romeo and Juliet of the Dark Hunter world!). The day before 'Bad Moon Rising' arrived, I reread Fury's short story to bring me up to date with the wolves. Ho hum, there wasn't much point. I'll explain...

I can understand that we need to see Fang and Aimee's side of previous stories. However, as the book progressed I began to read faster and faster. When was I going to get to something new? In retrospect I should have read slower (so that's my warning to you!) because we only read about the 'present day' (in terms of the Dark Hunter storyline) in the very last section of the book. Everything else is just a rehash apart from one interesting section. It's not giving anything away to say that this section concerns another realm (don't worry, it's far more interesting than more Greek god stuff!)and we're introduced to an intriguing new character: Thorn (an Archeron replacement in terms of interest?). I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot more of Thorn (hope so).

After finishing the book I'm left with the feeling, 'so what'? If you're a Dark Hunter fan then of course you have to read this book and it's perfectly readable (apart from the rushed writing which gives the characters things like an 'evil smile', followed on the next page by an 'evil laugh' - I'm getting used to this in Kenyon's later books and it's one reason I've stopped automatically buying all her books). However, the book could have been so much better. This is the first time we've had a bear as a main character, but to be honest you wouldn't know it apart from a liking for honey and the way the cubs's room is decorated (plus a little bear left on Aimee's pillow - cute). I don't even know what Aimee looks like as a bear (OK, she's foremost a human, but the bear must still be part of her character). And that's what is wrong for me with this story - it lacks depth. So much more could have been made of the struggle in their relationship and discovering the differences between the species (in Kelly Armstrong's books her wolves are truly wolves).

Perhaps 70% of the book is a rehash of past (and better) stories and the characterisation is a bit muddled (I think there are far too many 'clever' remarks and ALL the characters make them, not just the characters where it's part of their characterisation, so what is meant to be clever or funny just falls flat and distracts).

Therefore I suggest reading and enjoying, but don't expect too much so you're not disappointed. Plus don't rush the reading to get to something 'new' - there's not much of that so just enjoy what's there (I rushed too much and I'm therefore confused by Varyk and puzzled and irritated with Maman Bear's character - I should reread but I'm not convinced I can be bothered, which is very unlike me). By the way, before you give me a 'not helpful' for not raving about Sherrilyn Kenyon's book, please note I'm a fan, albeit a disappointed fan who lately has become more disappointed with the publication of each new book, but I haven't given up.

I have read everyone of the Dark Hunter stories. I have to say besides Ash, Fang and Aimee's story was the one that I was looking forward to the most. That being said it was a little bit of a disappointment. Not to say that I didn't love it, but I started out thinking ok, she's telling us how they met and then it was when he was hurt, what really happened during that time. But as the book went on I was reading parts of books that I've already read. The last part of the book was the best because it was current. In "Upon a Midnight Clear" there is a scene where Fang, Fury, Vane and Bride are all at their house and one of them looks at Fang and says "You smell like Bear" According to this book, he never lived with them until after everyone knew about him and Aimee...
Overall, if you're looking for a great re-read of all the other books into one, this is the book for you. While I still loved it because it's Fang and Aimee's story, it did fall short for me.

They just keep getting shorter...

I am (was) a avid SK fan. I was ready to wait at walmart at 12am to get Acheron. This book was really not what I expected. I am very tired of the buildup of a huge great book and then going into the bookstore to see it is almost a novella. More than half of the book was rehashing the past in a different viewpoint. One chapter was a chapter from Wren's book...probably just copied and pasted that. There is just SOOO much missing, so much character exploration that could have been brought in. All the regular dark-hunters were missing except for Valerius in the past. The new books seem less vivid to me. A really good author can let you picture the books environment in your imagination. I just got one big blur from this book. Even in the new part of the book it is almost impossible to tell where on the timeline it is taking place. This is just my opinion that it almost seems like Acheron like lost his powers at the end of the book (he didn't but it seems like he has been brought down on the character totem pole). I think she really needs to take more time with these books. I don't care about the manga or the marketing of the new website. I want a decent storyline and it seems like that is going by the wayside. I think I will switch my fan adoration to Christine Feehan...even after umpteen books they still have good character interaction and are more than 300 pages.
