Sick & Entertaining

Ryan Harding creates a rich and disturbing world in GENITAL GRINDER. While brutally grotesque, there is substance and story behind everything that happens. It's not just pointless gross outs like a lot of Extreme Horror. Most of the stories have very interesting concepts and there are great anecdotes throughout that really draw you into the stories.

Here's a short synopsis on a few of the stories that stood out to me:

DEVELOPMENT is about a high school student who develops film part time. The customers seem rather naïve and he starts a scrap book of their more intimate photos. Things take a turn when someone drops off some very disturbing film...

EMISSARY: Gabriel works at Movie Heaven. He's always had a fascination with Mondo movies. When Taste of Death 5: Into the Grave is released he starts seeing dead people around town.

GENITAL GRINDER II: DIS-MEMBERED is the best story featuring Von and Greg who also appear in two other stories in this collection. In this one they come up with a get-rich-quick-scheme involving severing a wealthy man's penis through a glory hole at a strip club and holding it for ransom. Things go awry.

Mash together Richard Laymon's storytelling, Ray Bradbury's creativity and Edward Lee's sexual deviancy and you get Ryan Harding's GENITAL GRINDER.

Should I lend this to my mother?

Blasphemous, perverse, evil, mean-spirited, vile, deviant, abnormal...

These are the adjectives, well some of them, that could be used to describe Deadite's recent collection of short stories by Ryan Harding. The forward by Edward Lee had me wondering if the man himself was just trying to sell the guys writings. But, no! every word is true. Ryan Harding is one messed up guy!

Honestly that is a good thing in my books and if any clinical doctor knew it I might find myself with a fancy new jacket and an interesting prescription.

Well this collection is for the weirdo's, the sicko's, and the disturbed that are looking for something to curl up and read. Probably with no pants on...

We get 8 short to longish stories. A forward by Edward Lee and Mr. Harding (should I call this guy Mister?) gives an in depth description of the birthing process of each nasty tale.

Since I'm one of those weirdo's/sicko's I mentioned above I loved every sickening moment of this collection. Highlights are the three Greg and Von stories: Damaged Goods (a sick tale of their adventurous night with a woman they happen to find) Genital Grinder (they get together to film the ultimate snuff film) and Genital Grinder 2 (yes!! more of the same.)

The other stories: Bottom Feeder, Sharing Needles, Development, Emissary and First indications give another side to the pestilent wordage this man can assemble. With stories about one night stands gone awry, serial killers and the cause and effect of watching too many shockumentaries.

Pay close attention while reading this collection as all the tales take place in the imaginary town of Bartok, which is seemingly populated by serial killers, perverts, the deranged and guys who lose their minds. At least I hope it's imaginary?! Characters pop up here in there throughout each story and this is one of the things I loved, which made this more then a collection of sick vintages, but a detailed mythos that Mr. Harding could elaborate on, if he would ever come back to writing...please come back and give us more!!

Get this one fast if you are a fan of Lee, Wrath, Ketchum, disgusting porn and extreme horror in general. Plus you get an awesome cover by Suzzan Blac to stare at while on the crapper where you may decided to store your copy!!

Gory Goodness

Before reading this book I had never heard of Ryan Harding, but Deadite Press have a good history thus far of publishing only great authors and when the introduction is done by someone like Edward Lee then it was always going to be worth a try.

The book is a selection of short stories with most of them having a similar theme to them - hardcore violence - but this isn't just a straight forward gore fest as there is a story behind the tales which is not something you always get with the more extreme books.

A lot happened

For such a short book a lot happened. My issues with it are the grammatical errors that took away from the story and things that did not seem to match up time wise.

Spoilers
My first major issue is how can someone not find someone else in this day and age. Neither main character could do it for years. The h did not tell the H about his kids for 5 years.

The other issue was the H's brother wasn't even mated and then 2 years later was mated with five kids. When did that happen.

I love this story. I could not put it down. This is so suspenseful and interesting. A very unique story line, it is different from other books even by this author. So much in a short story, but not rushed or missing something.

Liked it but then in a way I didn't. It would seem to me that this would of been a better short story than anything. And in all honesty I really don't like short stories.

I am awarding only one star mostly because the title of this book is NOT correct. The title, as shown on the cover, is:

The Art of Investing in Distressed Second Mortgages

The word "Second" is clearly important, and missing from the Amazon title.

Other justification is that it is only 56 pages, with many chapters having only 2 pages. It is extremely light on information, and you don't even get out of the introduction before being asked to buy more training from the author's website. Perhaps that training is where the information is which should have been included in this book.

As someone who has worked closely with Sherman in his ventures, this book does an excellent job explaining his philosophies and giving insight into this lucrative investing area. Sherman makes the concepts simple and easy to understand, while still providing outstanding technical knowledge. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the secondary mortgage market.

Frederick C. Hatfield, MSS, PhD, is Co-founder and President of the ISSA. Dr. Hatfield, (aka "Dr. Squat") won the World Championships three times in the sport of powerlifting, and performed a competitive squat with 1014 pounds at a body weight of 255 pounds (more weight than anyone in history had ever lifted in competition). Dr. Hatfield was honored by Southern Connecticut State University when they presented him with the 1991 Alumni Citation Award. He has written over 70 books (including several best-sellers) and hundreds of articles in the general areas of sports training, fitness, bodybuilding, and performance nutrition. He has been coach and training consultant for several world-ranked and professional athletes, sports governing bodies and professional teams worldwide. Dr. Hatfield qualified for the 1998 World Championships in Olympic Lifting and competed in the Masters Division.

good standard reference

I am not a powerlifter, but i weight train for fitness. I found this book to be very helpful in giving straightforward explanations of the importance of building a good strength base, and what exercises and approaches to use to achieve that. The different workout systems were clearly explained and the pictures and explanations of the exercises were clear. The diet information was also helpful and non technical. A nice addition to my fitness library (...).

I was a competitive powerlifter in college (never on the sauce), setting state records in the State of Alabama in the early to mid 1980's. I and my fellow powerlifters used this book as our primary source for increasing our individual lifts as well as our totals. Just looking at it today made me flash back to a time in my life when my strength was greatest.

I found this book extermely interesting and explanatory. Dr.Fred Hatfield (professionally known as Dr. Squat) presented the sport of powerlifting and bodybuilding in a way that even the "weekend warriors" can understand. And I have had this book for about 10 years now.

Excellent articles, as usual. Most were very interesting. A couple were a bit boring.

The usual high quality articles from "Warship." A couple in this edition were kind of boring, I felt. The most interesting articles were: the Japanese Shokaku class aircraft carriers; the naval war in the Adriatic 1914 - 1916; the French Patrie class battleships of around 1900; and the Italian navy aircraft carrier project of the 1930s.

Another great volume in the premier annual series. Three wonderful articles on aircraft carriers from an un-built Italian design from the 1930s, the last prewar Japanese carrier class and a long discussion on current fixed wing carrier technology. Other articles cover circular Russian ironclads, an early surface engagement between British and Japanese surface forces in WW2, French battleships and several other topics. The top writers in naval history and technology are well represented.

Worthy of the series

I have to agree with the other review. I just received my hardcover copy---and was up all night reading it. Warship is one of the premier journals on naval history, and this issue ranks among the best. From the 'might have been' of the very well thought out Italian carrier design of 1930 (ish), to the 'what really was' of a confused night surface battle in Jan 1942, by way of the often ridiculed but surprisingly effective round monitors of Russia, Warship articles can educate, inform and correct history in a surprisingly entertaining way.
I eagerly await every new issue, and it has a guaranteed spot in my library.

About the Author
Burton J. Bogitsh received his undergraduate education in biology at New York University (University Heights) and his graduate education at Baylor University (M.A.) and the University of Virginia (Ph.D.). He is currently Professor Emeritus of Biological Sciences at Vanderbilt University. He has authored more than 100 publications in the area of parasitology and has co-authored a textbook in General Zoology. He is an associate editor of the Journal of Morphology, co-editor of Volume 2 of the Microscopical Anatomy of Invertebrates, and has contributed many chapters to numerous edited volumes on parasitology. His research interests are in the ultrastructural localization of enzymes in helminths with a primary focus on the digestive tracts of trematodes.

Dr. Carter received his B.A. and M.A. degrees in biology at Loma Linda University and his Ph.D. degree at the University of California at Los Angeles. He is currently a Professor Biological Sciences at Vanderbilt University. He has authored more than 70 publications with a primary focus on the biochemistry and immunology of parasites. He has contributed chapters in several edited volumes such as The Biology of the Tapeworm, Hymenolepis diminuta, and has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Parasitology. His current research interests are centered on the host-parasite interactions of the causative agent of Chagas’ disease, Trypanosoma cruzi.

You Get What You Pay For (And not much else)

Like most general internists in America, I do not have much contact with parasitology. I bought the book to learn more about the topic and it fulfilled the expectation. It's a laundry list of organisms that have both a lot in common and their own idiosyncrasies. None of it is memorable and all of it can be obtained from reading any Internal Medicine textbook.

Clear and concise book with detailed monochrome diagrams and figures.

This is a fantastic book. It's not too dense and is actually quite readable. Each parasite has a complete summary including background, life cycle, clinical manifestations, detection methods, epidemiology, immunology and more. Similar to what other reviewers have said, most of the figures are colorless diagrams, but they are well-drawn and easy to follow. If self-studying, it would be best to pair with an atlas.

Highly recommended for anyone wishing to delve into the interesting realm of parasitology.

To be of real worth, a study of Shakespeare's biblical references should also enable the reader to determine which references Shakespeare borrowed from his plot sources and which he added from his own memory as part of his design for the play. The author studies every source that Shakespeare is known to have read or consulted before writing each play and has examined the biblical references in those sources. Shaheen then points out which biblical references in his literary sources Shakespeare accepted, and how he adapted them in his plays. This information is especially valuable when assessing the theological meanings that are sometimes imposed on his plays, meanings that often go beyond what Shakespeare intended or what his audience must have understood.

Shaheen is a good reference for anyone who is interested in learning how much of the bible Shakespeare used in his plays. Along with the biblical chapter and verse citations, Shaheen also refernce's the commonly understood practice of faith during the time Shakepeare was writing. It's very similar to Charles Wordsworth's book, Shakespeare's Knowledge and Use of the Bible, originally published in the 1800s, and like C.Wordsworth's book, includes appendices that allow one to search according to scripture passage (what are ALL of the Shakespeare plays that contain a reference to a certain passage in the bible?), and by play (what is the progression of scripture references as one pages through a particular play?). C.Wordsworth devoted an early section of his book to the similarities in phrasing (between bible and Shakespeare), and admitted that perhaps this would seem superficial to some. Shaheen pays very close attention to detail, to distinguish when Shakespeare seems to be alluding to the Geneva (Protestant) Bible (often from the older Greek texts), or the Douay-Rheims (Catholic translation from the already-translated Latin), or from the liturgical translation of the Psalms in common use.

This is all fine and interesting, but it avoids the more interpretive questions that follow: In a particular play, at a particular point in the text, *why* would the author have alluded to a particular scripture passage? What does it mean? Why hold the scriptural mirror up to the audience at that particular moment? What does the author and play attempt to accomplish by pushing the buttons of the church-going, bible-reading Elizabethan audience in those ways? (Shaheen's book does not explore these questions, but Steven Marx's much shorter book, mentioned below, does.)

Shaheen is perhaps too quick to dismiss possible biblical references merely on the basis of a non-biblical reference being another option. For example, if a passage in Julius Caesar resembles a passage from the bible, but also resembles a passage from an ancient Greek or Roman text, Shaheen tends not to consider that it may reference both the biblical and non-biblical sources. This is a disappointment, but at least Shaheen attempts to note these places and argue his case.

Also, as with Charles Wordsworth's book, Shaheen tends to look much more to the surface of the text in the phrasing of the words, rather than to consider plot similarities or echoes. This is perhaps where this otherwise very valuable resource really falls short.

On this point, a better approach is outlined by Steven Marx's Shakespeare and the Bible (Oxford Shakespeare Topics), who not only considers the surface allusions, but also examines the plays as a sort of midrash, rethinking biblical themes and plots.

Steven Marx considers a handful of plays, but not all of them. For example, he does not consider Hamlet, which is rich in biblical plot echoes that are not touched by the surface allusions. He also misses some allusions that are really not far below the surface.

For example, early in Hamlet, when Horatio and Hamlet are first reunited after Horatio's first encounter with the ghost, Horatio declares himself to be Hamlet's servant, and Hamlet says, no, he would switch places with Horatio on that score. This is clearly a reference to the scriptural admonition from Jesus to his disciples that, if anyone wants to be the greatest, he must be servant of all. But the reference is not encapsulated in the superficialities of the language, and therefore, it can't be attributed to the Geneva Translation, or the Douay-Rheims, or the Book of Common Prayer, and in fact, it seems to escape Shaheen's gaze, at least in this book-length treatment. And this is only one example. There are many, many more in the plays, where the references are often not contained in the phrasing.

And in fact, it could be that some of the most important biblical references, by necessity, could not be so obviously contained in the phrasing, because of the government censors who had to approve the text. Certain similarities to biblical passages or stories might be more dangerous to make too obvious.

This is not to say the book is not a fine accomplishment and a most helpful resource. It certainly is. But perhaps too many readers will assume that it's an exhaustive treatment of the biblical references in the plays, when in fact it only tries to be an exhaustive treatment of the references in the phrasing of the plays, a level quite close to the surface. Yet we know that Shakespeare's plays are many fathoms deep, to paraphrase Hamlet, and if we ignore that, we may be blown at the moon for all we miss.

I have had the wonderful pleasure of having Dr. Shaheen as a professor for the past 5 years and this book is pure literary genius. Having spent his entrie professional career researching and documenting all biblical references in all of Shakespeare's works, Shaheen leaves nothing to question. He knows exactly what he is talking about and this book is a must have for any Shakespeare scholar or anyone interested in the literary use of the bible. Not only are his lectures amazingly informative, this book is as well.
