Relevant, Necessary, Comprehensive and Potentially Transformational

In today's connected, complex world, where the ability to cultivate and sustain trusting relationships with myriad stakeholders is vital to personal and organisational credibility, ethical leadership has never been more needed. Countless recent scandals are testament to the sad fact that the demand for such leadership has frequently been let down by its supply. From the exploitation of garment workers in Bangladesh to the underwhelming figures on employee engagement in most countries, there is a sense that we are frequently let down by those who lead us. And yet there are multitudes who want to collaborate well across increasingly global boundaries to address the numerous universal issues that threaten the stability and sustainability of our world. Linda has written this book for all of us who seek to make a positive difference in lives, organisations, communities, and the world.

Ultimate Surger Guide-is the ultimate

I am a beginner and my teacher used this book in my surger class-she told me to buy it and read it like a college text book, complete with highlighting passages. I did and WOW. I refer to it often-the photos are detailed and directions complete and easy to follow and understand. A lot of shortcuts are included as well. I highly recommend this book for all ages of surgers!

AVOID Serger "Fail" with this book

Sergers are GREAT but you either take to them right away or find them frustrating. To avoid "serger fail", this book is excellent and it was the first one I got when I bought a serger.

BIG colorful sharp photos of stitches and threads and examples.

I suggest you make a sample of each stitch your machine can do, staple the sample on a page and write down the tension and settings. Put these pages into a notebook. When you pull out your machine, you'll be ready to set it up without having to dig into memory to remember the last sewing session.

Sergers are phenomenal on knits, make children's clothes in literally minutes and finish raw edges on materials like cottons and linen quickly and beautifully. I sew summer skirts in 20 minutes with my serger but I would not be able to do that without having this resource book handy.

Should be required reading

I can't say enough about this book. I ordered a serger on line and I had a particular purpose in mind. You have to know that I failed sewing in school, have owned five sewing machines since then and never learned to use any of them properly. Before it was delivered I ordered this book from Amazon with one day shipping and so I had it for two days before the serger arrived. During those two days I read it from cover to cover and then over again. I was still terrified but felt that I had learned a lot. My machine came pre-threaded and so I sat right down to practice. Voila a great first try, but now for my projects' rolled hem. I read my machines instructions and was able do it on my practice fabric. Now I needed to change thread colors. The tie on method didn't work for me so I decided to thread from scratch. I read my manual and watched the video, followed all of the instructions and thought I had done it right, but the thread broke and so did the needle. Then I remembered the book had mentioned broken thread and needles and so I went right to the chapter. There was the answer. "The lower looper thread must overlap the upper looper thread otherwise the thread will break every time". Why didn't the manual or the video mention this? If I never learn another thing, that little gem of advice was worth the price, but the book is full of all the information I need. It has a place of honor on a shelf above my sewing table and will be there for years to come. If you are a newbee like me, buy this book. You won't regret it.

Preface

Race and ethnicity, along with religion and gender, are topics that emerge in every area-politics, law, the economy, entertainment, and sports, to name a few. In addition, we as individuals observe the tension and sometimes violence that emerge in the multicultural nation that is the United States.

This second edition of Race and Ethnicity in the United States introduces the reader to the sociological treatment of the topic. I offer the basic perspectives used in the discipline and an overview of the contemporary situation. But as I point out throughout the book and especially in Chapter 6, race and ethnicity are not static. They are changing phenomenon moving to an even more diverse society in terms of race and ethnicity. I equip the reader with the basic intellectual tools to unravel this continuing emotional area of national debate. A Practical, Useful Introduction

I begin with an introduction on what minority groups are and how assimilation and pluralism function as racial processes. The presentation of the all-important areas of prejudice and discrimination draws on not only sociology but also psychology and economics. The significant role played by immigration-past, present, and future-receives a chapter-length treatment. A discussion of race and ethnicity would not be complete without recognition of both White ethnic groups and the diversity of religious expression today. In the concluding chapters, I seek to stress that intolerance knows no barriers and is experienced even by those minority-group members who have achieved some economic success. About the Author

Richard T. Schaefer grew up in Chicago at a time when neighborhoods were going through transitions in ethnic and racial composition. He found himself increasingly intrigued by what was happening, how people were reacting, and how these changes were affecting neighborhoods and people’s jobs. In high school, he took a course in sociology. His interest in social issues caused him to gravitate to more sociology courses at Northwestern University, where he eventually received a B.A. in sociology.

“Originally as an undergraduate I thought I would go on to law school and become a lawyer. But after taking a few sociology courses, I found myself wanting to learn more about what sociologists studied and was fascinated by the kinds of questions they raised,” Dr. Schaefer says. “Perhaps the most fascinating and, to me, relevant to the 1960s was the intersection of race, gender, and social class.” This interest led him to obtain his M.A. and Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Chicago. Dr. Schaefer’s continuing interest in race relations led him to write his master’s thesis on the membership of the Ku Klux Klan and his doctoral thesis on racial prejudice and race relations in Great Britain.

Dr. Schaefer went on to become a professor of sociology. He has taught sociology and courses on multiculturalism for thirty years. He has been invited to give special presentations to students and faculty on racial and ethnic diversity in Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, and Texas.

Dr. Schaefer is the author of Racial and Ethnic Groups , twelfth edition census update (Pearson Prentice Hall, 2011). Dr. Schaefer is the General Editorgeneral editor of the three-volume Encyclopedia of Race, Ethnicity, and Society (2008). He is also the author of the twelfth edition of Sociology (2010), the eighth edition of Sociology: A Brief Introduction (2009), and the fourth edition of Sociology Matters (2008). Schaefer co-authored with William Zellner the eighth edition of Extraordinary Groups (2008). His articles and book reviews have appeared in many journals, including American Journal of Sociology, Phylon: A Review of Race and Culture, Contemporary Sociology, Sociology and Social Research, Sociological Quarterly, and Teaching Sociology. He served as president of the Midwest Sociological Society from 1994 to 1995. In recognition of his achievements in undergraduate teaching, he was named Vincent de Paul Professor of Sociology in 2004.

This book is very thorough, yet it is very alternative and VERY anti-vegetarian and anti-vegan. It's definitely a good look-see if you want to stop antidepressants. I've done it, and it CAN be done (vegetarian and all).

Breath Awareness for Kids

Beautiful book for children to read. There is a real peaceful feeling throughout this book. Love the illustrations. Great introduction to the idea of mindful breathing for children.Every time I read this story...the kids seem to calm down. I also use A Boy and A Bear and Indigo Dreams to take the breathing concept a step further and actually teach the children the mechanics of breathing, I recommend Each Breath a Smile and I recommend teaching kids to breathe correctly. Also try Baby Buddhas for more ideas on how to teach

A new favorite

I was looking for a book to help me introduce concepts of mindfulness and meditation to my 22 month old toddler. This book does so in a simple, lovely way that is perfect for very little ones.

I wasn't sure whether my son would respond to the book, but I was pleasantly surprised (he's a big fan of Elmo, Grover and Ernie). The illustrations are both calming and engaging (lots of little kids for my son to ogle). I read the book slowly so we sometimes don't make it to the end before he jumps up to find another book, but most of the time, he asks me to read it again. I highly recommend it!

A Peaceful, Affirming Read-Aloud

This beautifully simple book is deeply spiritual without being "religious." I have read it aloud in Grades K-3 including Special Education classes, and it always has a calming, reassuring effect on the children (and on me too!). It can be an introduction to quiet imagination/visualization activities or a concluding activity to help relax and focus a group. The book itself can be a kind of meditation exercise, since part of the text suggests breathing and calming the body in gentle, repetitive language. This is an excellent book to have on hand; it may be used regularly with the same group or in one particular lesson. Unique and highly recommended.
