Auf deutscher Seite galten Firma und Familie Krupp als vorbildlich und patriotisch, auf der Seite der Gegner als Verkörperung von Hochmut und Angriffsgeist.
Firma und Familie haftete ein „Krupp-Mythos“ an, der unter anderem dazu führte, dass nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg der Inhaber der Firma, Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach stellvertretend für seinen Vater in den Nürnberger Kriegsverbrecherprozessen zu Enteignung und Festungshaft verurteilt wurde, ein Urteil, das obwohl wenige Jahre später aufgehoben, von bemerkenswerter Härte war. Dieses Urteil drückt klar die Überzeugung aus, dass die Industrie, insbesondere die Rüstungsindustrie, einen Teil der Schuld sowohl am Regime als auch am Zweiten Weltkrieg trage. Die Theorien, welche die Industrie und Krupp als Steigbügelhalter Hitlers darzustellen versuchten, wurden nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg weiter gesponnen und trieben ihre wohl farbenprächtigsten Blüten in den Werken William Manchesters, bis sie vor nicht allzu langer Zeit wissenschaftlich wiederlegt wurden. Firma und Familie Krupp haften wohl aufgrund ihrer wechselhaften Geschichte ein Mythos an, der einige Autoren in der Krupp- Dynastie gar nach den Wurzeln des deutschen Nationalcharakters suchen lässt. Im Zuge der seit den 1980er Jahren immer beliebter werdenden mikroökonomischen Studien zur Geschichte des Dritten Reiches ist es an der Zeit, sowohl das von Krupp überlieferte Geschichtsbild als auch die verwandte Methode der Geschichtsschreibung zu hinterfragen. Einen ersten Anstoß in diese Richtung liefert Werner Abelshauser, der durch seine Fragestellung „Krupp-Rüstungsschmiede der Nation?“ darauf hinweist, dass bei genauer Betrachtung des vorhandenen Zahlenmaterials zu Umfang und prozentualem Anteil der im Hause Krupp erzeugten Rüstungsgüter das überlieferte Bild zumindest fraglich wird.

Very good resource. I have been working with high-school students in tutoring Chemistry. This is a good resource to see what is needed to answer questions in a concise way that may not be answered simply with their text book. Also good resource for formulas and basic definitions as a reference for studying for tests and review through the semester.

From a caterpillar's point-of-view, children see the many happenings in the tall, tall grass: "crunch, munch, caterpillars lunch/dart, dip, hummingbirds sip" etc. Bees and birds, ants and snakes are among the daytime inhabitants. Then, with the "stars bright, moonlight" come nocturnal fireflies and bats: "good night, tall, tall grass." The childlike illustrations were created by pouring colored cotton pulp through hand-cut stencils, resulting in remarkable images. Colors--shaded and varied--range full spectrum, deep and true through sunny yellow, cobalt, plum, a dozen shades of green. On each double page appears the blue-eyed, yellow-with-orange-spots caterpillar, always in proper perspective to the other creatures. Two-year-olds (and even younger) will enjoy the rhyme and rhythm, three-year-olds exploring numbers will love counting insects, four-year-olds--who are sure they can "read"--will experience success after a few listenings, and adults won't mind the request, "Read it again, please." My 20 mo old son loves this book. It is very simple but he imagines he's in the grass. He loves being outside. He also loves much more wordy books like Garafalo, so I was surprised he liked this so much.

My grandson's favorite

This was the first book that sparked my grandson's interest and that he routinely brought to me to read to him. He's loved it so much we have had to replace it several times. On each page a caterpillar appears and is a great way to get him to look and point to it on every page. We all know this book by heart and it will always be a favorite. Classic, colorful and fun.

My toddlers love reading this book. The colorful photos and large print makes learning to read easy. They ask to read it over and over and love counting and identifying the various animals and bugs throughout the pages. It's a great buy!

About the Author

James Bailey was born in Arkansas City, Kansas. After pursuing an acting career in the early '80s, he discovered that writing was another way to express his pent-up anger and creativity. He was content to leave Hollywood but soon after was struck with a crippling form of OCD. Now recovered, he lives in Louisiana, where he continues to write and act.

For some it's unnervingly, but it's not so bizarre ;-)

Until last week, I didn't know the slightest thing about him, or about his book, until he went and introduced himself through MySpace, something that led to the inevitable reading of said book, and something that I'm really glad that I did. It's 222 pages of one of the most incredibly well written, fresh and original books that you're ever likely to read, a word of warning though, it really will make you question yourself, and exactly how pernickety you are. We all have an OCD, we may not realise it, or we do, and it's just insignificant, but we rarely externalises our OCD, are never forced to justify it, or explain it away, usually we're able to sufficiently hide it enough to function, but it wouldn't take much for everyone to collapse under the weight of it, and only a small percentage could ever do what James Bailey did, namely building himself back up. All of the patients in his book really do stand out too, because they're chillingly real, but then I suppose that's because they actually are, but he's managed to render them better than anyone else could have. It really is like reading the transcript of a Docu-Soap, and I'm not talking about an episode of "Cops", but an English one, because it's unapologetic, and gritty. What James Bailey has written is brutally honest, and I don't think that I've ever read that level of honestly, that level of shameless exposure; he made me feel like I lived it with him. Reading this book made me look at myself a little differently, maybe a little more clearly, but it also made me a friend in James Bailey, and that was well worth the cost of a good book ;-)

James Bailey is an amazing writer! He will touch your heart and will make you laugh at the same time. His book is very interesting because shows how he passed through several problems, risks, and tests in life, but didn't give up. He is a victorious! James is an wonderful person; he didn't just help himself but I'm sure many other people.

James, thank you for your book, thank you to share with all the world your very strong life's experience. You're so clear and I love it. Thank you to be people's friend.

A fantastic, inspiring & enormously funny read

There were 2 things that struck me in particular when reading this book.
One was James' honesty which enables the reader to acquire a rare and fascinating insight into the life of an individual suffering from such a disabling & severe condition.
I learned a heck of a lot about OCD through reading this book & I found it most fascinating to read about James' real life experiences.
Secondly was the humour that was rife throughout the book. James is clearly blessed with the ability to transform any scenario, no matter how daunting, into something so funny it just tickles you.
I loved every word. Brilliant.

Not what the Teacher Ordered

This book oddly enough was not formatted in a way similar to other books,with same edition and code numbers and was also missing a "key card" which was needed to access important info needed for the class.We ended up donating the book so it could be used as a resource book by other students at my daughters high school.We then had to purchase the book with the key card from the schools bookstore.I think that if a book is to be sold that requires an active key card that that should be a stated fact so the buyer can beware.I had no idea that books required keycards as this is a fairly new practice.The keycard if bought seperately cost nearly as much as the book.

This is a good self study Spanish book

This is a good self study Spanish book. It would help to have a little basic instruction prior to using it, but it is well organized, and would be very good to use with an instructor.

Possibly the best Spanish textbook I have used so far

I've been studying Spanish intensively for the past two years and find this particular text to be the best I have used so far. The focus is on conversation rather than just grammar, the exercises are effective, the mix of exercises is entertaining, the explanations and examples are very clear, the exposures to Latin American literature and geography are informative, and even the illustrations contribute to making this an interesting and useful text.

Los datos y las estadísticas que muestran el abandono de los padres por sus hijos es muy grave. El problema que veo en el libro es que no fundamenta claramente cómo desarrollar competencias para evitar que las estadísticas sigan bajando en lugar de ascender.

This book should be required reading for all Americans, written by a man who, as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during the VietNam War period, can write with some authority about international affairs. Fulbright's thesis is that Americans have two sides, one that is humanitarian and one that is puritanical.
While we may want to see others enjoy the virtues of democracy and freedom (our humanitarianism) we tend to approach them with an air of superiority and an inability to see that there are many cultures in the world and that of the U.S. is only one.
How accurate Fulbright is when he says that unilateral aid, either military or economic, can evoke anger and resentment by those who, Americans feel, should be grateful and eager to receive what we have to give.
Fulbright asks Americans to reflect on the fact that ours is a profoundly conservative society which abhors radical change. Others in the world are impatient with the lack of change and can go to extremes that would never be considered in the United States. Fulbright sees this in the discomfort Americans have with revolutions, being good only if they follow the path of our own. Any route that differs from American experience is suspect.
Fulbright rightly sees the strength of American society in the freedom to dissent and laments the fear and approbrium that dissent often receives. Humility is definitely in order instead of loud boasting and self-righteous denunciations (heard any of that lately???)
Tocqueville said of American democracy..."the smallest reproach irritates its sensibility and the slightest joke that has any foundation in truth renders it indignant; from the forms of its language up to the solid virtues of its character, everything must be made the subject of encomium. No writer, whatever be his eminence, can escape paying this tribute of adulation to his fellow citizens."
This book is Fulbright's effort to speak the truth. It's good to read at a time when we daily hear from powerful politicians who are never wrong and who seem to feel the amount of truth in a statement comes from the number of times it is repeated.
Fulbright's description of the use of fear to drum up support for foreign intervention is exactly to the point in the 21st century with talk of unilateral interventions. Having members of the United States Congress with the author's courage to speak out would simultaneously benefit the prospects for democracy and the image of the United States worldwide.

Reading a Legacy

At a time when there were no heart transplants and America had yet to put a man on the moon, one man wrote a book that speaks of our country today as much as it did when he wrote it in 1966.

It is a reflection on what we have become, and the choices we make for our future. There are two competing forces for the direction we take, what the author Senator J. William Fullbright calls two Americas: One is the America of Lincoln and Adlai Stevenson and the other is of Theodore Roosevelt and the Superpatriots. They are two distinct sides of the American character. The character of Lincoln is rooted in humanism and assumes that America's greatness is its recognition of its imperfections. The character of Roosevelt is rooted in American Exceptionalism, or what the senator refers to as an arrogance of power.

The dominant strand of the American fabric is the democratic humanist one. It is rooted in the principles of our Founding Fathers, humanism, tolerance and accommodation. The coexisting strand is that of Theodore Roosevelt's belief in America's superiority, or what Fullbright sees as intolerant Puritanism. It is the belief that America expresses its cultural superiority through its wealth and dominance, that superiority is measured in military might.

According to Senator Fullbright these forces of the American body politic have been at odds for years with the belief in America's superiority dominating foreign and domestic policy. This is the strand the senator contends must not prevail. This path follows previous empires that failed because rulers did not rule wisely or well. He profoundly states, "power tends to confuse itself with virtue and a great nation is peculiarly susceptible to the idea that its power is a sign of God's favor, conferring upon it a special responsibility for other nations to make them richer and happier and wiser, to remake them, that is, in its own shining image." (Does this sound familiar)?

This superpatriot model is moralistic as well as it is imperial. It demands conformity on its citizens for whatever foreign policy it embarks upon. It fails to recognize that American values are not tied to it but separate and distinct. Fullbright contends that the very light and vibrance of a democracy can be found in its dissent; it is its greatest example of freedom and energy.

Noble intentions are not an example of a nation's greatness, as the author shows that historical interference in the affairs of others were all done with excellent intentions. This becomes a drain on a country's power that leads to political insignificance and irrelevance. Even our benevolence can be seen as humiliation, as our assistance is an embarrassing loss of face, and as we tell other nations what they should do to improve their economic or political circumstances. We are baffled by their lack of gratitude.

Just as the most effective leadership is by example, other nations will be influenced by us by the way they see the welfare of our citizens. America's greatest influence on others is the level of education, health, and standard of living we provide our citizens. They will not be influenced by our military might, a policy of solitary interest, or our "arrogance of power."

Our country is now at the height of its American Exceptionalism, which means it is at the depth of its greatness. Our continuation on this path will lead to our downfall. Our recognition that we are a partner in the family of nations and not its parent, will enhance our stature, not diminish it.

Senator J. William Fullbright died February 9, 1995. This book is one of his legacies. As long as people read and cherish this book that legacy continues.

Must Read

I was no fan of Fulbright's in the '60s but this book opened my eyes to the startling parallels between then and now, forty years later. It's a "must read" for anybody who wants to put today's global events in perspective. And that his widow, Harriet, was a childhood friend of mine, does not skew this review! I read the book with an initial bias against his views but was completely converted by the end.

About the Author

Dr. Laxmidhar Behera is currently Associate Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Kanpur. He has recently joined ISRC, UUM as a reader on a sabatical from IIT Kanpur. A Ph D from IIT Delhi, he has worked as Assistant Professor in BITS Pilani during 1995-1999 and pursued his post-doctoral studies in German National Research Center for Information Technology, GMD, Sank Augustin, Germany. He has also worked as visiting researcher/professor in FHG, Germany, ETH, Zurich, Switzerland. Dr Behera works in the area of intelligent robotics and control in general. His specific areas of research are visual motor coordination, advanced neural learning algorithms, advanced control architecture, visual tracking and obstacle avoidance of mobile robots, visual navigation and data modeling using soft-computing approaches and quantum neural networks. He has published more than 90 papers in refereed journals and conference proceedings.

Dr. Indrani Kar is currently working as senior project engineer at IIT Kanpur. She obtained B.Tech. degree from Haldia Institute of Technology and M.Tech degree from IIT Kharagpur. A Ph D from IIT Kanpur, she has published a number of research papers in the area of intelligent control.
